Copenhagen Opera House

Fabulous acoustics, stunning architecture and a spectacular waterfront setting mark this out as a must-see cultural highlight.

Copenhagen Opera House is one of the most expensive opera houses in the world, built at the beginning of the 21st century as a timely expression of optimism and confidence in the future. It was paid for by a local shipping company and donated to the city of Copenhagen. The work of celebrated Danish architect Henning Larsen, the venue seats a maximum audience of 1,700 and is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics.

The location on the island of Holmen, close to the harbour entrance opposite Amalienborg Palace, offers a perfect panorama of the opera house reflected on the water. Each facade of the building demonstrates a different design inspiration, with an elegant curved glass entrance facing the city and straight angled walls to the side and rear, topped with a striking metal roof.

Inside the views are equally impressive. The foyer is adorned with spectacular glass lanterns by the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and a floor of Sicilian marble, while the auditorium is fitted out with maple wood balconies and a flamboyant gold leaf ceiling.

Guided tours in English are available most days, where you can view all the public areas as well as the private balcony of the Danish royal family and go backstage to see where the creative work of the opera company takes place. Alternatively, if you have time, buy a ticket for a performance and experience the auditorium in all its glory. The year-round programme includes opera, ballet, concerts and drama, so it’s easy to find something you’ll enjoy. If the main house doesn’t appeal, check out the attached “black box” space, called Takkelloftet, an intimate 200-seater venue which shows experimental theatre.

The island of Holmen is connected to the city centre by a network of bridges, so you can reach the opera house easily by public transport, bicycle or on foot. Limited pay parking is available on site. Full programme and booking details are published on the Copenhagen Opera House website.
