Council Tower

Council Tower featuring a square or plaza as well as a small group of people
Climb to the top of this historic white monument for impressive panoramas over the ancient Romanian city of Sibiu.

The Council Tower is one of the most important symbols of Sibiu. Originally built in the early 13th century, this white tower has remained a constant in the city, despite renovations and reconstructions surrounding it. Ascend the tower to reach the observation platform and enjoy wonderful views stretching out to the Făgăraş Mountains. Along the way to the tower, investigate the interesting clock mechanism and galleries with art or photos at several floors.

The tower’s exact construction date is unclear, but it’s believed to have been built toward the start of the 13th century to serve as one of the entrance gates to the city. The tower underwent extensive reconstruction in the 16th century, during which an earthquake infamously caused the upper stories to collapse, killing mural painter Johann David. Walk around to the tower’s southern wall and inspect stone reliefs depicting lions, which were part of the original 13th- century tower.

The tower has served many functions over the years, including storing grain and serving as a fire watchtower, interim prison and botany museum. Today the tower comprises seven floors, including an underground passage which links Piaţa Mare with its smaller sister square, Piaţa Mică. Step inside the narrow entrance door and follow the spiral staircase upward.

From the top-floor observation deck, spot Piaţa Mare and Nicolae Bălcescu Street toward the south and the Terezian District to the north. On a clear day, you might be able to see the peaks of the Făgăraş Mountains when you look south.

On your way back down the stairs, examine the intricate mechanisms of the tower’s clock. Listen for the bells tolling the hour during your visit.

Find the Council Tower at the corner of Avram Iancu Street in Piaţa Mare, next to the Holy Trinity Roman-Catholic Church. Reach the area on foot from most parts of the city. The tower is open daily and there is an entrance fee. Bring your camera along to take photos of the city from this popular viewpoint.
