Walk through the ruins of two forts then discover how these military strongholds helped to steer the course of early American history.

Crown Point State Historic Site was at the frontline of the European conflict over the New World. Between French and English occupations, this fort played an important part in early American history. Along with its fascinating past, the site’s beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Champlain makes it an equally great place to visit in the present.

The French were the first to build a fort at Crown Point, in 1734. Its strategic location gave them control of the land between New France and the British colonies. The British tried to gain control of the fort several times, but it wasn’t until the French abandoned the stronghold during the French and Indian War that the British took over. They immediately constructed a new fort.

Explore the ruins of both the French and British forts. Today you can see what's left of two barracks, one for soldiers the other for officers. Inside the soldiers’ barracks you can clearly make out the stone fireplaces on the structure’s two floors. Admire the neat stonework of both properties.

Then go to the museum that takes you back to the 18th century through a series of interactive exhibits. Head to the auditorium for a presentation about the site’s history. Docents clad in period clothes are there to answer any questions.

There is a small admission fee to enter the museum, although children under 12 years of age get in free. You can tour the ruins at no cost. The grounds are open every day during daylight hours, while the museum is open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays, between the months of May and October.

After your tour of the ruins and the museum, hike around the grounds of the Crown Point State Historic Site. Several beautiful trails wind along the shoreline of Lake Champlain. If you are interested in birds, visit the bird conservation area, which is part of the grounds. More than 180 species have been spotted here.
