The Imperial Torquay

"We had booked a double room with a sea-view. On arrival we were disappointed with the room as the bed was only a standard double size, which few hotels have these days and which was not clear to us when booking (though perhaps we assumed wrongly). This room was also a bit small for our taste and expectations, and it wasn't even the smallest size we could have booked (which would have been the "cozy double") so I can't image how "cozy" that would be. Annaya on reception was very patient with us and helpful in upgrading us to a larger room (at a price). And once we had upgraded we were very happy with the room and the view. The hotel has an aura of internal grandeur consistent with some of its celebrated past guests but is perhaps showing its age in terms of its exterior decor. It is only a short walk from the buzz of Torquay harbour. The breakfast buffet provided a good choice, with some nice touches (e.g. overnight oats with banana) but we found that from 9am it was quite busy and as a result they were unable to handle food requests such as poached eggs or eggs benedict. We enjoyed our visit and a special mention should go to Annaya and Callum on reception who were both polite, helpful and professional in all our interactions and issues. We would consider coming again. A tip: We were definitely happy we had paid for a sea-view room as the rooms at the back of the hotel have a limited inland view. Also note you have to pay £10 per night parking, which is annoying."

"Staff were excellent. Breakfast was very good and service not too long. The only thing that lets the hotel down is some aspects of the rooms have not been very well maintained. Shower cubicle door hanging off, no cold water but scalding hot water in one of the rooms. Windows not fitting very well and can't be closed or opened. But only used as a base, so overall satisfactory."

"The Grand hotel is lovely. Its in a great location, close to the train station, beach and town centre. The outside pool was great, lovely and warm. Our family room was great, it was very spacious and the seaview was stunning. The restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was really high standard. The bar staff were also lovely. My only negative comment would be about a couple of the reception/front of house staff. There was a young girl who was on duty when we checked in and her attitude was just a bit abrupt and blunt. She didn't give a welcoming feeling at all on arrival and when we had a question for her she gave the impression it was too much hassle for her to help. Check out was smooth but when we went to collect our luggage from the luggage room the mail member of staff who got our bags, threw one bag down on the floor in front of us and then had a bit of an attitude when we informed him we were still waiting for 3 more bags. I think the reception staff could maybe do with a customer service refresher course."

"A lovely hotel in a great location. A lovely welcome on reception also when we checked out. Our room was lovely and clean and a great decor. We really enjoyed our stay with you. "The rooms were lovely, clean and spacious and the air conditioning was lovely during the hot weather. Breakfast was good, with a wide variety of options from fresh fruit, cereal, toast, pastries, hot cooked breakfast, fruit juice and tea and coffee. I do think the menu for the lunch evening food could have had more options and also the service could have been improved slightly. Although the staff were extremely friendly, unfortunately the service was quite slow, one evening we waited over 40 minutes for our meal. We had only been told about a long wait for the food after we had ordered our drinks and food, this should really have been advised as we entered the restaurant, not when we ordered. Overall it was a pleasant stay and I would return of ever in the area."

"Room was lovely and just the right size for a short stay. Plenty of wardrobe space but no drawers (could do with adding one drawer under the wardrobe for smaller items). Restaurant was very spacious and light, breakfast was lovely, apart from the coffee in the machine (too strong for us). Car park doesn’t have enough spaces for the number of rooms but there was an overflow car park just opposite. Check in and check out was easy. No drink facilities in the room but our room was just around the corner from the drinks station on our floor. Plenty of choice and always fully stocked. Bar area was nice and comfy chairs, thru also have an outdoor terrace to have drinks on."
