A Roman tower, which dates back almost 2,000 years, is a curiously designed treasure that stands between the historic centre, the sea and a park.
In the centre of Antalya, the Hidirlik Tower is an iconic structure with an intriguing design. The bottom part of the Roman tower is square while the top is cylindrical. Charming gardens with bushes, trees and a well-kept lawn surround the structure, which has been used as a fortification and a lighthouse. Visit this landmark on the city’s coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Consider the history of the 46-foot (14-metre) structure as you gaze up at it from the gardens. It dates back to about the second century during the Roman occupation of the region. Theories suggest it was used as a tomb and a church during its long history.
It is believed the Romans built the square bottom part first before deciding later in the same century to add the circular tower. Take photos of the impressive Roman fortress as you stroll through the pretty gardens. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn on the serene and scenic site.
Enter through the small gate on the east side of the tower. Ascend the narrow staircase in a small room to reach the top. The red Turkish flag flies atop the structure. See the tower at night when it is bathed in golden light.
The site of the tower is a popular place to gather and relax on a sunny afternoon to enjoy the excellent views of the sea, the Roman Harbour and the city’s cliffs. Stroll through the adjoining Karaalioglu Park to see water fountains and an eclectic array of exotic plants and trees.
The Hidirlik Tower is a recognizable feature in the Old Town district in the centre of the city. Visit other famous attractions in the area, including Hadrian’s Gate, the Clock Tower and Karaalioglu Park. It is easy to reach the central zone by bus, as there are stops around the historic centre.
