Intercourse

Travel Guide
Intercourse showing farmland
Find out about the customs and traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch and browse the range of homemade foods and handicrafts.

Founded in the 18th century as a gathering place for the Amish, Intercourse is a charming town full of friendly people. It is surrounded by farmland and has a town center with quaint activities for families, including horse-and-buggy rides and artisanal markets. Step back in time in this enchanting town and enjoy its serenity.

Wander along the main avenue and stop in at the variety of independent boutiques and craft shops. Relax in a café and watch locals, sightseers and Amish folks going by. Bring your kids on a horse-and-buggy ride through the town center and learn about the region’s Pennsylvania Dutch traditions that stem from German-speaking settlers.

Attend one of the many fun events held here, including the Intercourse Heritage Days in June, the Music for Everyone Festival in late June and the Christmas Festival. The latter two are held at the Kitchen Kettle Village, an outdoor shopping area specializing in homemade goods and quaint lodgings.

Note that due to the town’s sexually suggestive name, its signposts are often targeted by thieves and pranksters. Chat with locals about the potential origins of the name, which may relate to an old race track or a change in the meaning of the word. Find all types of memorabilia and souvenirs relating to the name in gift shops in the town.

For a change of theme, head to the American Military Edged Weaponry Museum. It has an enormous collection of U.S. knives and other tools employed by the military. Inspect a machine gun, swords and bayonets, among other intriguing weapons.

The town is in Lancaster County in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania. Fly to Philadelphia International Airport and drive west for 65 miles (105 kilometers) to get here in a little over 1 hour. Get around the small town center on foot or cycle through the verdant countryside.

Intercourse offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into the ways of the Amish.
