An enormous dam and a range of green parks surround this great lake, which is a beautiful place for a long walk.

Lake Ishitegawa Dam is a vast and scenic basin full of fish and other aquatic life in the outskirts of Matsuyama. Dotted with green parks and its namesake dam, the lake is a lovely place for a fun and picturesque family day out. Stroll around the shore and appreciate the stunning views of the water.

Marvel at the enormous concrete dam in the southwestern corner of the lake that controls the level of water that supplies the city. Walk across the top of the dam for an unforgettable vista from dizzying heights.

Visit adjacent Miharashi Park, which provides the best close-up views of the dam. Forming an imposing backdrop are the Ehime Mountains, which reflect on the lake’s shimmering surface. Spot the local fishing enthusiasts trying to catch bass and other fish in the lake. Bring your binoculars and gaze skyward for the range of birds soaring below the clouds.

Head north along the meandering shore and stop for a picnic in leafy Kutsurogi Park. Drive across the bridges traversing the water toward its northern end. As you make your way south again along the eastern shore, you’ll find Komorebi Park. Sit and enjoy the serenity of this tree-laden field, with your feet dangling into the water.

Notice that the water level varies, drying up considerably in seasons of drought. On your way back toward Matsuyama, stop at Wakigafuchi Park, whose winding trails run beside the waterway leading away from the lake.

Lake Ishitegawa stands beside the Yuyamayanagi district in the northeastern peripheries of Matsuyama. From the city center, drive northeast for about 6 miles (10 kilometers) to get here in roughly half an hour. Pass other highlights such as the Dōgo Onsen and the Yokotani Dam along the way.
