Expand your love of fine art when you see the porcelain work that this city is known for. Then tour ancient churches and unwind in flower filled gardens.

For more than 200 years, Limoges has been a renowned centre for porcelain production, while its enamel industry goes back to the Middle Ages. The prosperity they brought to the city is reflected in some of its grand old buildings. Discover the history, art and culture of Limoges in its museums, galleries and architecture.

Stroll through the streets of the city's historic quarters to sightsee its old buildings, including the gothic Saint-Etienne's Cathedral. Construction of the church started in 1273 and was completed in the second half of the 19th century. See the relics of St. Martial, the patron saint of Limoges at the Church of Saint Michel des Lions. Its name comes from the two lion statues that guard the entrance. Visit the Crypt of Saint Martial, the tomb of the saint.

Elsewhere, find more examples of beautiful buildings, including the art deco train station and magnificent City Hall.

If you are into porcelain, see thousands of pieces at the National Porcelain Museum and also at the Fine Arts Museum in the former bishop's palace. Inside this 18th-century building, you will also find paintings by Impressionist masters and a collection of painted enamels from the Renaissance. More of the city’s past can be uncovered at the Museum of the Resistance. It tells the story of Limoges during World War II and how some of its citizens fought back against Nazi occupation.

Limoges is also a city known for its trees and green spaces. Go for a stroll or a bike ride along the banks of the River Vienne and visit parks and the botanical garden. One of the most popular nature escapes is Evéche Gardens. Stroll by fountains and enjoy the sight and scents of hundreds of plants.

In the evenings, find a number of gourmet restaurants around the historic quarters. Be sure to try Limoges cognac, a local specialty.

Reach Limoges by flying into its airport or driving or taking the train from Paris, approximately 240 miles (386 kilometres) away. With art, grandiose buildings and riverside walks, Limoges is an attractive blend of culture and relaxation.

"Celine the Reception/Manager whose multi tasking saved the day. The hotel is overpriced and understaffed. The pricing of the meals was excessive for the amount received. Finding an uncleared breakfast table was unwelcome as was the poor selection for the price"

First Sunday of the month many museums and galleries are free to access. The rest of the city closes on Sunday and so finding out places to eat is hard but this is typical for France.
