Located on the northeast coast of São Miguel, Farol do Arnel was the first lighthouse to be built in the Azores, and began operation on 26 November 1876.

It’s still a working lighthouse today, 141 years later, and is open for guided tours every Wednesday afternoon. As luck would have it, we were there on a Wednesday afternoon, but we only discovered this fact when the lighthouse keeper saw us poking around and invited us inside.

A word of warning though: if you plan to visit Farol do Arnel, park your car at the top and walk down – unless you’re a very competent driver or have an addiction to adrenaline and danger.

"We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Tradicampo Eco Country Houses, and it was the perfect final leg of our honeymoon. Both prior to our stay and from the moment we arrived, the host was exceptional—warm, attentive, and truly went above and beyond to make our stay feel special and memorable. The views were spectacular, the gardens and surrounding property were beautifully maintained, and the setting felt peaceful and thoughtfully designed. Travel to and from the property was easy, the location was ideal, and the home itself was very comfortable—everything we needed to relax and fully enjoy our time. Overall, the experience exceeded all expectations. Tradicampo is a special place, and we could not have asked for a better way to close out such an important trip.
