We LOVED our 6 day stay at El Albergue! We adore trains so we always sat in the dining area nearest the tracks to watch the trains to Machu Picchu loading and unloading. When it was our day to make the trip, we appreciated how convenient and easy it was to be right there at the train station. We found the occasional train horns at night added rather than detracted from our experience too (though I should say that our room #16 was the furthest from the tracks.) Visiting the organic farm, coffee roaster and distillery is a must, and the traditional Peruvian lunch cooked on buried hot rocks should not be missed. The location also makes for a pleasant walk to the ruins or into town on an old Inca trail through green fields. Caleb was great about communicating with us prior to our arrival and invaluable in arranging taxis and our tickets and guide Paul for Machu Picchu. Finally, I applaud El Albergue for it’s emphasis on environmental sustainability and green tourism. They are doing their part to eliminate the scourge of plastic. You won’t find any plastic water bottles, but you will find filtered water to fill your own reusable bottle for a minimal donation. We will be encouraging anyone we know who will be visiting Ollantaytambo to make their visit even more fun, comfortable and special by staying at El Albergue.
