Really liked staying here. We chose this hotel due to its proximity to Jamaica's prime birding locations and were satisfied with the amenities offered and the kindness of the staff. Chef Mike cooked up some very good meals and was rather flexible with his menu. The night guy, Sifron, spent a good portion of time helping us find and photograph the resident pair of Jamaican Owls

Very nice relaxing location with wonderful garden. Hotel a bit dated - fans not aircon. Very nice staff. Swiffrian the nightwatchman let us in after a late arrival and looked after us very well when we had problems with a flat battery.

Booked Hotel Mockingbird on a whim for my birthday. I’m so happy I did! The hotel is tucked away in the hills of Portland, and is such a relaxing getaway. Spent 2 nights with my partner and the hospitality we received was outstanding! The staff is extremely friendly and ready to assist with any concerns you may have. The restaurant, Wilke’s, was great. We enjoyed every meal that we had. Our waitress Aneice had the best customer service. We can’t wait for our next staycation at Hotel Mockingbird. We’ll definitely be back.

Much more charm than 5-star chain hotel
Don't expect a luxury hotel chain experience. This is a 10-unit boutique hotel with personal attention from the manager and staff. While perhaps not as glamorous as a five-star hotel, it has infinitely more charm, from the fresh flowers clipped from the property surrounding the hotel to the outdoor dining and pool surrounded by jungle to the musical sounds of birds. Wonderful place to stay!

If you are a birder, this is the place to be. It would have been nice to have the kitchen open and available to guess at all times. We had to plan our meals and times in advance, which was somewhat inconvenient. The gardens are lovely.

For those who like peace and quiet, or are into flora, fauna and bird watching, this is a great property. The views of the water and the Blue Mountains were stunning. Ideally located for those who like walks/hikes. Close to Frenchmen’s Cove and Port Antonio. On our visit, the restaurant was closed (permanently I think). We did order from a local chef that the property is connected to but we had to eat our meals off property. Bring mosquito repellent! There are plenty around. Lots of bugs too. Hard to get away from with the greenery.

This property is a haven of tranquility. The views are stunning, the buildings and common areas meticulously kept, nice pool and the entire setting blends with nature. We had a truly memorable weekend of relaxation there. Host, Angela, went out of her way to make it special, especially for my daughter who was celebrating a birthday. Keelie kept us fed with delicious food that was beautifully presented. If you are looking for an oasis of peace and rejuvenation, consider this property. Hotel Mocking Bird Hill is truly a gem. We will be back!

**Overall: My boyfriend & I had a great time for our stay the ambiance of the hotel was relaxing & secluded feeling. To our knowledge the hotel didn’t have much to offer amenity wise but it gave us more time to plainly enjoy each other’s presence. **If I’m being critical: - the water never got hot (luke warm) also showers were a tad complicated to navigate - No tv, microwave, or fridge in room - Road driving up to the Hotel was unsettling at night (poor lighting, rough roads, small hotel signs) - Restaurant/bar was not open (we got food & drinks from local areas & brought back to room) - No room service or housekeeping entire stay (we were never asked) - Rooms could be updated (but we’re still nice, clean, & very comfy **Suggestion: The only thing I’d change is perhaps offer breakfast as complimentary instead of $25 USD. - Maybe sell or provide Mosquito burning coils to rooms (as we purchased ours locally & it gave us peace of mind since the room is an open set up)

Thank you for your comments Daniera. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for advising about the water. We will have this looked into. With regards to TV, microwave and fridge, we do not advertise that we offer these so we are a little puzzled that you had expected them. All these items are high energy users which, as an environmentally friendly hotel we avoid. As for the roads, as hoteliers, we are not responsible for the roads nor the lighting of roads. Re the restaurant and bar, we have clearly listed these as closed. This is a result of the pandemic forcing us to re-evaluate our operations when we re-opened. We do however offer takeout provided by Keelie's Kitchen and have been encouraged by the positive feedback we are receiving from guests about her cuisine. The breakfast that we offer is US$ 15.50 per person not US$ 25. Given the fact that we have significantly reduced our rates since re-opening last year July, we cannot offer this complimentary. We do have to generate enough income to cover costs and pay our staff a fair wage. Please do be careful with mosquito coils, they are not that healthy so we avoid them. We do hope our answers clear up your questions and look forward to having the pleasure of welcoming you again.

A haven of tranquility for nature lovers
We loved our stay at Mockingbird Hill, and Angie was a wonderful and thoughtful host (one example - she noted that I asked for hot pepper sauce with breakfast, and so suggested picking some fresh scotch bonnets from the garden for my omelette the following day - little touches like that make it feel like a home from home!). We loved being set within the gorgeous tropical gardens, surrounded by nature and tucked away at the top of the hill - the bird and insect sounds while you sleep are loud, but if you enjoy them (as we do) it is incredibly peaceful and meditative. We also loved the natural ventilation throughout the building, and numerous areas for sitting back and enjoying the surroundings. If you are looking for a cookie-cutter resort and all that entails (entertainment, air con etc) - this is not it! But that’s what we loved about it. A very restful place to come back to after the hustle and bustle of Port Antonio. Looking forward to coming back and trying the restaurant when it re-opens!

It never ceases to amaze us that when travelers are planning their trips and making their choices that they do not avail of the wealth of information provided for them, they do not do their due diligence prior to making bookings. They then choose the wrong hotel and proceed to blame the hotel for their choice. If one is not a Nature lover, if one does not appreciate the sounds of Nature (birdsong, whistling frogs, crickets, etc.) and one must have a television in the room, then why on earth would one book Hotel Mockingbird Hill? This remains a mystery to us. We have put all the relevant information and images out there and expect travelers to use this information when making their choices. This guest clearly made the wrong choice of hotel and now wants to make it appear that the hotel is at fault. We have met our responsibility to provide information about the hotel and believe that travelers should meet their responsibility be first reviewing the information provided and then making their choices.

Stayed at the Mockingbird hotel in January 2020 for 2 nights. This hotel was beautiful - perched on top of a hill overlooking the beaches of Portland, it was truly peaceful and serene. The greatest part of staying in this hotel, however, was its local Jamaican staff and the food. Petrona, the lady that oversaw checking-in the hotel, was an incredibly knowledgeable and extremely efficient leader. Petrona exemplifies hospitality - from adding essential oils to the room to tying q tips in a delicate blue bow, these touches made the room feel like a home away from home. It struck me that Petrona didn’t have an official title, as I saw, and she could benefit from having this as a supervisor as she clearly has the leadership and the hospitality knowledge to have this role. Chef Joseph was great, leading the kitchen of Milles Fleurs - a slow food organic restaurant. The freshness of the food and the creative dishes were outstanding. After dinner, I had an opportunity to have a conversation with him and this led me to think that he could be a great asset both in and out of the kitchen as he clearly enjoys interacting with the guests in a professional but personal way. Orlando, the bartender, was phenomenal. A super nice and hard working bartender who gave great recommendations on local restaurants and places to go to. Ana Lee, the morning server, was a kind server who I also found out baked the morning breads which were hearty and delicious. Try her coconut bread.

Eco friendly but has a gentile poverty feel
The hotel is up on top of a hill in a lust tropical area so it is incredibly peaceful, secluded and great for waking up to the sound of birds, lizards, frogs etc. The hotel has a strong eco friendly ethos which is commendable however that leads to directives on what you can and can’t bring into the hotel room (no food or plastics) and what you do with your garage (if not biodegradable you need to take your own garage with you when you leave.) given no harsh chemicals are used to wash sheets and towels we found a few marks on the linens. They were clean not spotless. The breakfast area was clean and tidy. Breakfast (continental) was a good selection of fruit and homemade breads, however In my eyes this is not a continental breakfast. In Europe you would have ham, cheese and at least eggs. Breads were tasty but a little dry after being toasted. If you want any other breakfast, maybe Jamaican fare, you need to order 24hrs in advance which was not made clear when I enquiries. We ate out for breakfast the first day because of this, and also would not want to have the same breakfast every day. Bed was comfortable, with no tv or ac which was fine for us, and WiFi is strong so you can stay connected. Nice balcony with chairs to look over the gardens. Shutters rather than walls giving a good breeze. Overall though for the price the amenities offered don’t match the price point.

The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating but this is an Eco-friendly hotel which means a lot of bugs and there is no air conditioning. Plus the breakfast is limited or you can purchase breakfast at an additional cost. It is also very difficult to get to because they are on top of a hill and the road conditions are not that great. If you are up for an adventure and green then this is the perfect hotel for you.

We're a family of 4 (children ages 9 & 12) and stayed a week at this hotel. We commend Mockingbird Hill for being truly dedicated to supporting and empowering the local community and reducing their environmental impact. The grounds are beautiful, the view spectacular. With that said, we had a leaking sink that was never resolved, a shower that backed up and had no hot water for half of our stay. At first we didn't mind, as we've stayed at other eco hotels where there was no hot water, however we were informed beforehand. Then one day, hot water randomly appeared, then it was gone the next day. When we inquired about it, we were told it is turned off every day at 4pm and they must have forgotten to turn it back on. Wi-fi was down for 3 days and spotty at best, granted there was a lot of rain and a seemingly so response from their internet provider, but everywhere else we went had wifi. The cost of taxi drivers for airport transfer and excursions (the latter they were adamant they arranged for) were WAY overpriced, as was their food. I highly recommend walking to the village at the bottom of the hill and grabbing food at Woody's- great food, fun people, nice atmosphere and way better value for your money. There were 3 other guests staying at the hotel –one of which a travel agent– and they all expressed their disappointment as well. When my family and I departed, we gave them honest feedback which wasn't well received. It's too bad because I think they have a lot of potential.

Superb boutique hotel in gorgeous setting
This is a beautiful hotel, sited on a hill overlooking the ocean and Port Antonio. The hotel provides a free shuttle to Frenchman's Cove, just 5 minutes away. Wonderful comfortable rooms, extensive tropical gardens that attract hummingbirds. The bar and dining areas have dramatic views, and The Perch, located at the top of the hotel, has the most extensive views of all, with dining by candlelight under the stars. The food was excellent with Caribbean and Indian influences. The service is consistently helpful and friendly. Shireen and Barbara planned our excursions to the Falls, rafting, and the Blue Mountains. Barbara's art illuminates the hotel.

A journey back in time....really wonderful
The Mockingbird hill Hotel is immaculate. There are constantly people fixing and cleaning. The food is really gormet and well worth the meal plan. There are really no good resturants other than the hotel. The hotel helps you plan your activities for the next day. The views from the hotel are really wonderful. There two beaches near the hotel are only 5 to 10 minutes away by cab. The hotel uses their driver for Frenchman's cove which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The other beach is Winfred beach and they use a driver from an agency. Both are great. Although there is no airconditioning the cool breezes and fan cool you off. It was like sleeping in a primeval forest listening to the tree frogs and birds put you to sleep. To save time we charted a plane from Timair from Montego Bay to get there but you can take a cab from Kingston for 1/2 the price. The trip to the coffee farm in the Blue Mountains was really an adventure we saw lots of birds. There is also a star deck just built.
