Punta Jandía Lighthouse

Jandia Lighthouse featuring a coastal town and a lighthouse
Stand at the southwestern tip of Fuerteventura and gaze out at the ocean from the vantage point of a historic lighthouse, which features an accompanying museum.

Take a long trip to the south of Fuerteventura to find the remarkable Punta Jandía Lighthouse. The still-active beacon dates back to the 19th century and today hosts a fascinating museum about the surrounding natural park. Take time to appreciate the spectacular ocean views before spending time browsing the landmark’s interesting exhibits.

Marvel at one of the oldest lighthouses in the Canary Islands, which stands at 62 feet (19 meters) tall. The dark-stone beacon was built in 1864 and has been guiding ships around the southwestern corner of the island ever since. Its white light flashes every 4 seconds at night and it is visible for 22 nautical miles.

Explore the museum inside the old lighthouse keeper’s home. Like many lighthouses in the islands, this is a simple, single-story white building. Wander through five galleries that feature displays on Jandía Natural Park, from its natural history to its flora and fauna.

The first room contains information on the geology and habitats of the natural park. Head into the green room to read information boards on the vegetation and flowers that grow in the striking volcanic landscape. In the other rooms, learn about ecology in Fuerteventura and the wildlife that lives here. Look up to see a whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.

Take time with the drive, which passes along the edge of the stunning landscapes of Jandía Natural Park before reaching this stunning landmark. Loose stone tracks make it an unconventional route to the south of the island. Try to spot the peak of the Pico de la Zarza, the highest mountain on Fuerteventura.

Before reaching the lighthouse, pause in the small village of Pueblo de la Cruz, which has some restaurants and a small beach.

The extreme location of Punta Jandía Lighthouse makes it only accessible by car. Drive here from Fuerteventura Airport in about 2 hours, or come from the coastal town of Costa Calma in about an hour. Bring your camera for shots of this far-flung monument backed by the ocean.
