"Upon arrival our room was very hot. The heaters only have settings for low or high, no OFF. I asked at the desk and was told the system for the entire motel was controlled with one unit, and they set it seasonally to be on or off...for everyone. It was autumn, with weather that can swing from cool to warm. I opened windows, hoping that the curtains would keep the black flies at bay.
The mattresses were horrible. So broken down that I had to take care not to roll out of bed if I got too close to the edge.
Access to the room was difficult, with the car park quite far from the room. The shortest route was across a large (wet) lawn, not an easy task when pulling a large suitcase.
The restaurant....the first time in many many years that I've been seated and walked out before ordering. We did find the bar down the road to be more inviting and offered a better menu.
Heartland hotel was the definite low point of our travels in New Zealand. "
