Put aside a day for tradition, culture and food in Quidi Vidi, a coastal fishing village that combines a fascinating history with beautiful scenery and a thriving arts and crafts scene.

Enjoy the charms of Quidi Vidi, a traditional fishing village within the city limits of St. John's, Newfoundland. Quidi Vidi was established after the discovery of its rich surrounding fishing grounds in the 16th century. Today, this lakeside settlement prides itself on its rural character defined by its collection of homes, stages, sheds and wharves nestled into a dramatic scenic setting. Stop by the Visitor Centre in the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation, where you can learn about the French-British struggle for ownership of the area.

As well as an information centre, Quidi Vidi Village Plantation is an artistic hub for emerging artisans. Browse exhibits of unique paintings and crafts created by its 10 artisans working on-site in their studios. Purchase souvenirs and gifts from the artisans who are happy to chat about their creative processes.

Quidi Vidi also offers a range of exquisite culinary experiences. Take a seat at the Mallard Cottage restaurant and try game and seafood dishes paired with wines or warming rums. Be sure to try Iceberg Beer made with 10,000-year-old iceberg water and crafted in the award-winning Quidi Vidi Brewery.

Work off your meal with a stroll. The loop around Quidi Vidi Lake takes less than an hour. This trail is part of the Grand Concourse, a series of interconnected walking trails around the St. John’s area. On your walk, take in views of the dramatic coastline and note the rustic fishing wharves clinging to the rocky outcrops. These ports are still used daily by a population of over 1,000 Quidi Vidi locals.

For a longer trek, set out on an adventure along the East Coast Trail, a 336-mile (540-kilometre) path that leads to the outermost reaches of north-eastern Canada. This trail is best explored after consulting with tourism operators who'll provide maps, guides and seasonal advice.

Get to Quidi Vidi via metrobus from downtown St John's. Quidi Vidi is located near Signal Hill and St. John's harbour, which played pivotal roles in the area's military history. Take a tour and learn about the colonial struggle for the area's fertile fishing grounds.
