There are a number of airlines that fly direct flights from Singapore to India’s Chennai International Airport, notably, Jet Airways, Air India, Scoot, SilkAir and Singapore Airlines. Direct flights usually take approximately 4 hours.
Chennai International Airport Information
Chennai International Airport (MAA) is the 4th busiest airport in India and spreads its old and new terminals across Meenambakkam, Pallavaram and Tirusulam. There are currently three terminals facilitating the travel for southern India. The first of the terminals is Kamraj terminal, which serves domestic flights around India. The second terminal Anna, serves for international flights, there are two blocks and old and new with the old block handling arrivals and the new part for departures. There are currently plans for an expansion of the international terminal as well as a completely new construction for a domestic terminal. There are shuttle buses, battery vehicles or a walkway that will take you between terminals as the terminals are quite a distance apart. There is also a 3rd terminal called the Haj Terminal, which is an exclusive terminal in operation during the Haj pilgrimage and traffics around 600 pilgrims each time.
There are a number of food facilities that cater to customers in both terminals, with a selection of restaurants and cafés, as well as snack bars and vending machines. There are also a number of different duty free shops that sell gifts, fashion, locally made goods, luxury products, and bookstores. There is also a pharmacy that can be found in the domestic terminal. There are dedicated child care rooms, TV areas to entertain the children, alternatively for you adults there are spa and massage facilities that can be enjoyed before your flight. There is airport Wi-Fi located across all terminals that can be connected to free of charge.
Getting From Chennai International Airport to Chennai City Centre
By Train: Take the train from Tirusulam Railway Station by walking down Great Southern Trunk Road once you leave Chennai International Airport. Take the train to Egmore Station, the service runs every 20-30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased either at the station, although to save time its advisable to purchase these at the airport. The journey from Tirusulam into the city centre will take you 25-30 minutes and will cost INR 12 for second class and approximately INR 100 for a first class ticket.
By Taxi: Once you arrive visit one of the taxi service desks available in the airport. Aviation Express has a particularly good reputation for service and price. You will prepay for your taxi into the city centre which should take approximately 30 minutes, and costing you between INR 350 to INR 450.
By Bus: There is a bus stop just outside Chennai Airport, where the number 18A and 18B will both take you into the city centre. This service operates between the hours of 05:00 and 22:00, and will cost you INR 20 for the 18A ad INR 35 for 18B, these providing a cheaper alternative to a taxi. The journey time for both these services is approximately 45 minutes into town.
