Medellin

Moravia is a community within Medellin that literally grew from a municipal landfill. Impoverished residents built makeshift homes out of whatever building materials they were able to scavenge from the mountain of garbage.

Over time, a community formed, and while the government tried to push them out, the people stood strong. During the 80's, Pablo Escobar won the support of the residents by building proper homes and setting up infrastructure. Whether of the kindness of his heart or a ploy for support, the outcome was the same.

Today, with the help of the government and NGO's, the landfill is now a beautiful park with a proper community gaining strength.

This heart is one of many art displays built by the locals, from the very garbage once used to build their community.
