Basilica of Santa Croce

Many of the most famous names in Italian history are buried in this vast Franciscan basilica known as the “Temple of the Italian Glories”.

The history of Santa Croce dates back to 1294, but today’s opulent basilica with its world-famous frescoes bears little resemblance to the simple chapel founded by monks in memory of St Francis. It is now the resting place of many of Italy’s most illustrious forefathers, as well as a fine example of Neo-Gothic architecture. The world’s largest Franciscan church takes time to explore thoroughly, so it’s a good idea to take a free guided tour or rent an audio guide to ensure you don’t miss anything. Sixteen chapels house the tombs of Italian heroes including Dante, Rossini and Machiavelli. Michelangelo’s tomb is decorated with allegorical sculptures representing painting, sculpture and architecture, while the tomb of the astronomer Galileo depicts allegorical figures staring heavenward to the stars. Many other monuments feature flamboyant sculptures inspired by the art of the Renaissance. The soaring arches of the nave display a wealth of impressive paintings and frescoes, drawing the eye upwards to the timber roof which is typical of Franciscan places of worship. Notable treasures include Donatello’s gilded relief of the Annunciation on the south wall and wooden crucifix in the Bardi Chapel, and Giotto frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapels. After you’ve explored the atmospheric interior of the basilica with its breathtaking artworks, step outside to admire its ornate Neo-Gothic marble façade.Santa Croce is in the Piazza Santa Croce, a short walk north from the Duomo, and is open every day apart from national holidays and Holy Days of Obligation. There is a small charge for admission, as well as an additional charge for audio guides or themed tours. In the first week of June, the Calcio Storico recreates a 16th-century football match, a lively re-enactment of the Italians’ favourite national sport played between teams dressed in costumes of the period. A schedule of special events and opening times can be found on the official Santa Croce Firenze website.
