Do you have any tips for my flight to Bodrum?
We've pulled together all the info you need to make your journey as pain-free as possible. Follow our insider tips and you'll be breezing through the airport and discovering Bodrum in no time at all. What to pack in your hand luggage:

  • The trick to having a hassle-free travel experience is to be prepared. So, let's start with the basics: passport, travel documents, bank cards and any vital medications. Next, bring items that'll help while away those hours, like your laptop or a good read. You'll also want to bring your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. Finally, be sure to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, deodorant and a spare change of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

  • While the list of restricted items differs between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes tools, metal cutlery, fuel and fireworks. Sporting equipment like golf clubs, and items that could injure passengers, such as pepper spray and guns, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

  • The aisles of an aircraft are no place for a fashion parade. Don comfortable layers and choose shoes that are closed-toe, flat and easy to pull on and off.
  • You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To minimize your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks or tights and move your lower limbs often.

How to get through airport security fast when flying to Bodrum?
The trick is to be well prepared before you reach airport security. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Bodrum in the blink of an eye. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a great start:

  • Be sure to have your ID and travel documents handy. They're the first things you'll be asked for by airport security.
  • Next up is the X-ray machine. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to beep. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
  • For just a few moments, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronics must also go through the scanner.
  • Remember to remove gels and liquids from your hand luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
  • The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Hiking or heavy-style boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
  • Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in your carry-on baggage. If you must bring these kinds of items, put them in your checked luggage.

With a new terminal completed in 2000, it is a modern airport with flights to and from all over Europe, especially in the busy summer season. The airport handles around 3.2 million people a year, well under its capacity, so it feels comfortable and easy to use. There are very good Havas coach services connecting the airport and the town, usually timed to match departures and arrivals. The journey takes around 45 minutes.

You can also take a taxi, but these can be pricey so it's best to try and haggle for a good price.

If you're just making the journey from your hotel to the beach and back, then walking is the easiest and most convenient option.

However, if you're exploring more of the town, or taking longer journeys, then a dolmus (a shared taxi following a fixed route) is a good idea. This is generally the cheapest way of getting around in Turkey.

There are also plenty of private cabs but these can cost significantly more – and you should agree a fare before heading off.

What are the must-sees in Bodrum?

The most prominent and spectacular landmark is without doubt the Castle of St Peter that looms over the town. It's a museum these days, and one that specialises in underwater archaeology. The castle itself is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval architecture in the world.
