A Great Weekend Getaway

Fabulous Views in a Gem on the Bosphorus
Sumahan is one of our favorite boutique hotels. Located directly on the Bosphorus on the Asian side, it has a superb view down the waterway to the old city of Istanbul. Plus you get to watch all the boats going by and the sea birds as well as dolphins playing out in the water (we spotted a group of dolphins three or four times during our stay). This is a small hotel - only 13 rooms, I think. It used to be 24 rooms when we stayed there previously, but the downturn in tourism has forced the owners to rent out one of the buildings. Still, it's a gem. The room we were in was on the second floor of the main building (actually the level you walk into from the street, as the building is set into a small hillside), and faced the water, as do all the rooms in the hotel. It had big windows that could be thrown open to enjoy the fresh breeze and sights and sounds of the Bosphorus. I think all the second floor rooms are similar. The first floor rooms are at water level and have a short lawn between their French doors and the water, with a couple of garden chairs and a small table set up for each room. The rooms are very comfortable - ours had a king bed, which was set up on a platform about one foot high (remember this if you get up in the night), and the bed as set at a slight angle in order to take advantage of the view out the windows - you can lie in bed and see the water. At the foot of the bed is a wide easy chair and ottoman that makes for great relaxing & viewing.

A truly excellent small hotel tucked away on the waterside where you can while away the time and watch the ships go by accompanied by dinner, lunch, breakfast or even just a drink. Special mention should also be made of the staff who are exceedingly helpful. Thoroughly recommended. Thank you.

This hotel is on the Asiatic side of Istanbul. situated on the Bosphorus. and has an unbeatable view of the waterway. By boat and taxi it is easily assessible to the European side. It would be difficult to find anything about which to complain. If one likes quiet and luxury at a reasonable price then this is the place to go. We have visited it over a number of years and always the staff have been kind and extremely helpful. We have never been disappointed.

Spectacular views of the bridge, Bosphorus and European side. Beautiful library. Amazing food. And Halil on reception arranged everything requested in advance, with very quick and helpful replies by email. Highly recommend staying here for a romantic few nights.

once we turn on the a/c it smelled like cigarettes .. we tried to open the windows but a lot of misquotes came in.. beautiful views and nice relaxed location, but the price is overpriced the hotel's bathrooms are not updated and the service is just not there..

Delightful luxury hotel on the Asian Bosphorus
Sumahan is a delightful luxury hotel with great service. Its location is on a bend of the Bosphorus (Asian side) with a fabulous view looking down the strait directly at the old city. It is located up the strait from the old city in the direction of the Black Sea, just past the first vehicle bridge that crosses the Bosphorus. It is a little removed from the tourist areas, so not within walking distance of any major sites; however, they do have a free launch service (25 min or so) which operates at a few scheduled times to and from the Kabatash docks, located right at the end of the metro line that runs through the old city. From there you have convenient and easy access to any tourist destination. Kabatash is also the location of a ferry service that operates to the Prince Islands. If the launch schedule is not convenient, you can hire the launch like a water taxi, although that is expensive (30 euros or so). Probably because of its location further from the main tourist area and its higher price point (more in line for business travelers or family gatherings like weddings), we had the launch to ourselves on every trip. On the other hand, the location means that the area is much quieter than would be a hotel located more in the central city area. I believe that all the rooms at the hotel face the water, providing great views. The service was wonderful everyone from the desk clerk to the restaurant wait staff to the launch captain was friendly and helpful.

Rooms from the hotel have a great view of the Bosphorous. We stayed in a Loft Suite which offered a good level of comfort but the cleanliness good definitely be improved. The Breakfast buffet is disappointing with a very limited choice. The main issue that we had though was the level of service which was well below what you would expect for the price. The view is the best thing about this hotel

Away from the noisy crowd
This is a very nice place to stay in on the Asian side away from the milling crowds on the other side. If you want to go across the hotel provides a free boat shuttle service. A nice touch. Breakfast outside right on the edge of the water is one of the highlights provided the weather co-operates. A short walk takes you to a small village where the locals congregate on weekends in a choice of small eateries. The attached restaurant offers a good menu at a very favourable price. When not doing touristy things just lay back on the grass and watch the Bosporus traffic pass by. Overall a very pleasant stay.

The hotel is in a great location right on the water providing stunning view of the bosphorus. Great for a romantic getaway. The free boat service allowed us to enjoy the european side as well. The breakfast was lacking in selection and the person who attended us at breakfast was grumpy and unhelpful. The room was clean with free wifi and complementary water but no coffee and tea.

A beautiful relaxing break
We went to Istanbul for our wedding anniversary. The hotel takes about 50 minutes to get to from the airport and the traffic isn't great, but it was totally worth it. The hotel, as suggested by its name, is right on the water. They were super helpful in sending us directions to the hotel in Turkish so we could hand it straight to the taxi driver. We were upgraded when we arrived, which was a lovely surprise. The room was fabulous with a mezzanine floor for the bedroom and bathroom, and a downstairs with a great sofa and fireplace (and downstairs toilet). There were french doors that lead straight out to the garden overlooking the water. Istanbul was great and you can see the big tourist attractions in a couple of days, so don't feel bad about wanting to stay in the hotel! We ate in the restaurant one night (brilliant) and the other two nights we asked for the log fire to be lit and stayed in looking at the view and ordering room service. Bliss!

Good but not perfect!
This is a very nice hotel for a couple looking to escape the crowd and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Bosphorus. The only two things I didn't like was the mattress and a bit of noisiness from the other rooms due to poor building construction/isolation. For the mattress, they said it's a Queen one and the description online says so too but it was really just two twin mattresses put together on the same frame so if you happen to sleep in the middle of it, especially if your a couple, you'll wake up with a very upset back!

Wonderful time on the Bosphorus!
We arrived to a free upgrade to a loft suite, and when they opened our doors, the views were just spectacular: right out into a garden overlooking the Bosphorus. We had dinner at their restaurant, tapasuma, which was delicious (and well priced). The fireplace in the room made for a cozy evening. The breakfast was delicious, and the ferry trip really nice (when it's not raining - they need a plank for getting on/off the boat, the only reason I took a star off). The ferry going back is difficult because the kurucesme dock is not easy to get too, so you can't spend all night downtown without getting a taxi back (and traffic is hell). The hotel was small, but gorgeous. Little fruit brought to our room every day, with evening turndown and someone to make the fire. I am recommending it to all my friends and definitely plan to go back in the future. Definitely a more romantic retreat, but there were families staying there too.

we were greeted with name as soon as we stepped out of taxi and promptly assisted with luggage. Upon our check in we loved the view so much that I requested for a upgrade to higher category room. The hotel gave me free upgrade to a room where we could look out of the windows from the bed. A truly five star service with smile. In fact the staff was helpful with every thing we asked for from travel assistance to special food request. The view of the Bosporus is spectacular. Loved our stay in this incredibly charming hotel despite it being located away from the main sites.

On the Bosphorus
The Sumahan is simply superb in every respect with the location and service being the top of the list. Watching the boats pass while sitting a few steps from the Bosphorus with the first bridge illuminated later at night is a memory for life.

A week in paradise!
We are originally from Istanbul, but we haven't been to Turkey for more than 10 years. We chose Sumahan because of its unique location on the Bosphorus and proximity to parents. You simply cannot find a better location for a hotel on Bosphorus on Asian side. There is complimentary boat shuttle to two locations on the European side. Food at two restaurants are fabulous and after 8 days of complimentary breakfast I gained 10 lbs!! Cleanliness is very important to me and I always complain or request extra towels etc to cover surfaces; but this hotel was unbelievably clean. My favourite hotel is Halekulani in Honolulu and I can easily rate Sumahan as my second favourite. Entire staff is fantastic;so friendly, professional, kind. They get out of their way to help you. I recommend it to anyone going to Istanbul. It is a wonderful boutique hotel where you feel at home while you have all the amenities of a large hotel. We will definitely go back!
