In Hancock park located in downtown LA are the La Brea tar pits. You can enter the park for free to see the tar pits themselves, as well as visit the museum for a nominal fee. One interesting fact was that the prior owner of this land brought the pictured mammoth here through downtown LA back in the 40's by towing it by VW beetle. What a sight that would have been!
