Pett Level is located on the South East coast of England and is a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' - A 5000 year old forest! At low tide on this beach you can see tree roots, trunks and branches of this ancient forest. After the last Ice Age, sea level was lower than it is today and the forest began growing on what was dry land. As the climate warmed the ice began melting and the sea level rose, claiming the land the forest was on. The trees and roots became preserved below the water in the mud. Due to the sea level rising the forest is becoming exposed again where the tide has worn the mud away. Its a fascinating place to visit at low tide.
