This vibrant Tamil district is the place to go in Singapore to find Indian cuisine and to experience Indian culture and celebrations.

Singapore's Little India makes for a fascinating visit. It grew out of overspill from the Chulia Kampong district, which was originally designed to house all of Singapore's Tamil immigrants. Though much more multicultural today, Little India retains many Indian inhabitants. Much traditional trade continues here too, making it a must-see addition to your Singapore schedule.

Serangoon Road is the best place to begin. Take a walk down Little India's main commercial thoroughfare and admire the attractive architecture. Stop at the independent shops to savour the scent of spices, and perhaps buy a few to take back home.

Tekka Centre is an altogether livelier experience than Serangoon Road. Wander around the wet market, which specialises in Sri Lanka crabs, then try on traditional Indian costumes in the affordable clothes shops. The tailors here will rapidly alter garments for you.

There are many exquisite houses of worship in the Little India precinct, including Abdul Gafoor Mosque and Foochow Methodist Church. The jewel in the crown, however, is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, an incredibly ornate Hindu construction dedicated to the goddess Kali. Take your shoes off and head inside. Here, you'll find images of the goddess in question wearing a necklace of skulls and brutally killing her victims.

Unsurprisingly, the curry in Little India is exceptional. Vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves can be bought on the ground floor of Tekka Centre. Otherwise, seek out a good fish head curry – it's a Little India classic.

Special events, such as Diwali, bring an added layer of colour and excitement to the Little India experience. Check ahead to see if your trip coincides with any festivals.

Little India is in the central downtown district on the east side of the Singapore River. Get there by walking from your accommodation, or by travelling on the MRT and alighting at Little India MRT station. Shops and restaurants are usually open daily.
