The southern shore of the Hood Canal in Union, Washington can be a great place for astrophotography - especially on a pleasant summer night. Ed and Ethel Dalby brought this wheel by boat from Seattle in 1924, where it had been employed as part of a cable car system (likely on Queen Anne Hill). They attached dredge buckets re-purposed from Seattle's Denny Hill regrade and generated enough electricity to power their home and several cabins until the 1940s.
This Pacific Northwest resort and spa sits on the glacier-carved Hood Canal and offers Seattleites a pleasant escape from the urban jungle. While there are plenty of summertime activities on the canal itself, the resort is also a cozy place to hole-up during the winter months. The indoor pool, giant hot tub, sauna, steam room and spa offer plenty of opportunities to wind down.
