Perfect location for the steam trains. Lovely staff behind the bar. Not a lot of parking but we did manage to get parked. Good variety of breakfast. Dinner was lovely and big portions. Restaurant themed around the steam trains, great for enthusiasts. Thankyou

Perfect stay in Wernigrode
Perfect location if you arrive to Wernigrode by train. Great tidy, clean solo room and a nice breakfast buffet overlooking the steam engine railway. Helpful front desk staff. The town is beautiful.

Great stay in this quaint little City
The staff were friendly, the check-in process was cumbersome but not to the point of being annoying. We ate dinner in the hotel on night of our three night stay and had a delicious meal that was properly priced. Breakfast eat morning was well stocked and hot. We overlooked the railyards which provided endless entertainment a the old steam trains were moved into position.

Just the ticket
Conveniently located near the Harz narrow gauge railway, (with a railway theme to the hotel) but only a few minutes walk towards the centre of the historic town centre. Clean and modern rooms , a good breakfast buffet and friendly helpful staff.

Stopped four nights. Overall pretty good, if slightly more expensive than it might be. The hotel was a few minutes walk from the railway stations, and provided free parking. I guess that the inflated price is as it is a themed location for the narrow gauge railway, with the drinks delivered by train feature in the restaurant. Room was good sized, and very clean. The double bed I booked was actually two single beds pushed together, with a single duvet. The rooms could do with tea/coffee facilities. The bar / restaurant was good, as was breakfast which was available from 07.00.

Caters for all very well.
This hotel is perfect for all types especially the rail fan. Over looks the HSB shed/yard and has a model train delivering the beer to the table. Very clean and comfortable with helpful staff. A small city tax provides a discount booklet including area buses. One to remember.

The hotel was very nice, the rooms, the beds, the location. Except when we came down for breakfast there was hardly anything left at the buffet, no meats, no cheese, no fruit; and it was not replenished, either. The staff was wonderful.

Perfect Location
My first impression was one of exceptional freshness in the room, which was of good size and comfort. Check in was quick and friendly and breakfast had a good selection. The location is perfect for exploring the town and region. For those taking the steam train into the Harz or traveling by normal train, the stations are across the road. The beautiful pedestrian zone which is also where you catch the shuttle to the castle overlooking the town, is a pleasant stroll less than five minutes straight down the street. You also get free regional bus transportation with your tourist card at checkin. Perfect location, friendly service, nice room, excellent value.

Great hotel & Location
If you're into railways, this has to be the best hotel in town. Located opposite the HSB railway station in Wernigerode the hotel has a railway theme throughout with room names & decoration having a railway theme throughout. The dining room comes complete with drinks from the bar being delivered to the table via model railway. Our room was basic, but clean & tidy. Evening meal was delicious, and breakfast was a great spread of all you could fancy. The town is well worth a visit, and this hotel is as well.

Next to the steam railway
I have stayed here a few times, this time we had a railway room overlooking the front of the hotel. The room was average and comfortable, but the staff as usual were great, the bar and restraunt are excellent and although it is a little expensive it is in a tourist area and is comparable price wise with the other accomadation.

Altora Hotel
2nd time of staying at Altora. Very good location, opposite the steam railway. Food superb and generous portions. Breakfast, included in price, also plentiful and varied. Rooms are clean and whole locations is looked after.

Trains deliver your drinks at the Altora
We had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Altona.The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. The position of the hotel and its close proximity to the steam railway station was an added advantage as our main reason coming to Wernigerode was the rail journey through the Harz Mountains. We could watch the daily steam up from our breakfast window....a very pleasant stay.

Nice Hotel, spotlessly clean convenient location friendly staff breakfast very good, staff were friendly polite and helpful. Although their admin was not very good and they had no record that this was prepaid thru Hotels.com, spent sometime showing emails before they were satisfied. Despite that I would recommend this Hotel.

the ideal hotel for the railway enthusist
This was about the sixth time I stayed here, So that should say everything. I am a railway enthusist so being right opposite the steam engine sheds is great.The staff here are always good and most speak english. Breakfast very good and fresh.Room and bed comfortable but on this visit rather hot due to the hot weather. Maybe a fan in the room when these conditions prevail.The hotel id about an 8 minute walk to the town centre.

Very close to the station . Hotel comfortable and. Breakfast Good. At checkout reception was adamant we had not paid and. Insisted that we pay again,even though we had shown her evidence on the booking confirmation. We had no option as we had a train to catch. Took over an hour to sort out the problem with the Expedia and the credit card company. Rather spoilt an otherwise enjoyable stay.

Wonderful breakfast, very comfortable and spacious room in new wing. If you are into narrow gauge steam railways you can’t beat this location. All the action is right across the street and you can see it and hear it from your room.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The staff at the reception and dining area were wonderful, in particular Olga. She never stopped smiling and was quite accommodating. The hotel location is within walking distance of the train and main area of town. We stayed in a room facing the parking lot, which was much quieter than the street side. Our room (101) was quaint, with 2 double beds, and a large shower. Breakfast each day was quite nice, with breads, cereal, fresh meat cuts and cheeses. There was also hot eggs and bacon each day. Dinner was okay, but mostly Italian dishes and nothing to write home about. Menus were available in English. Overall, it is a very pleasant 3 star hotel.

Had an excellent 2 night stay in the Altora to ride the steam train up the Bröken. Staff were excellent and informative. Food in the restaurant was fabulous and the model train that brings you your drinks is a wonderful gimmick. Breakfast although continental was well stocked, only issue was the sausage and scambled egg warmer didn't keep them very warm!

Confortable and convienient.
Clean comfortable good sized room. Convienient location near to the main railway station and HSB steam railway, 10-15 minute walk to the town centre. Breakfast OK, and evening meal good, apart from the model railway running next to the tables which delivered your drinks, etc. This was entertaining initially but became annoying after a while - would have preferred better (human) service!

The hotel is across the street from the train yard. Great spot not only for those who like trains but steam trains. My kids love trains and could not keep away from the window. We booked the larger room and the building we were in was modern and the room was clean and comfortable. My only complaint were the glass bathroom doors and partition in the bedroom. Though they were decorated with steam train etchings, they allowed light in the rooms. Bothersome if you are sleeping. The train station is only about a five minute walk. My kids had a great time taking the train to the top of Brochen Mountain despite the weather. Not so busy this time of year.

Dream hotel for steam train fans!
We had 2 nights here in a very spacious room, actually almost a suite as the bedroom was separate to the lounge area. Very nice bathroom and a separate toilet. The hotel overlooks the locomotive depot for the Harz narrow gauge railway which for me was a delight! Not noisy at night as the trains don’t operate then and in any case the windows are double glazed. The hotel has its own restaurant with an excellent menu and if you get a table by the windows, your drinks will be delivered by a large scale model train! Great fun!

If you are planning to come for a trip on the Harz Railway (which you should) this hotel is the best place to stay. It is right across the road from the ash pit and coaling facilities, so you get to watch the steam locomotives being serviced at the end of their days' work over a pint of beer! If you decide to have dinner at the restaurant, the drinks are brought to your table by the model railway, a nice touch. It is a short walk to the station(s) and to the town centre, so an ideal location.

Convenient Clean Railway Themed Hotel
Excellent location. Much better than expected room. Very good breakfast buffet included in the very reasonable room price. Extremely convenient for the steam railway and the restaurant bar has a novel railway theme with service rendered by miniature train set. Great experience, especially if you are a rail enthusiast. Staff are very friendly and take part in the railway experience. Close by main town square.

Clean, lovely hotel right next to the steam trains
I love this hotel! It has so many neat little nuances like the train that delivers drinks in the restaurant, the immaculate rooms and common area, the comfortable bed, the large windows that allow you to hear the trains if you want or not, they are that good. The location is wonderful! It's right next to the steam train depot which transforms you back to a bygone era. The trains take you up to the top of Brocken Mountain and beautiful hiking in Harz National Park. It's a couple blocks from shopping and restaurants in the picturesque city center of Wernigerode. The restaurant has wonderful food! We stayed 3 nights and had dinner there twice! There is a patio out the front door to enjoy a beer or a little nook on the second floor to watch the night settle in. The beer on tap was amazing! I love the staff and the accommodations. We would highly recommend the Hotel Altora to everyone. Request a room in front to enjoy the view of the beautiful hillside and trains, or if you're looking for a silent stay, request a room in the back.
