“Excellent”
Great view - be sure to get a second floor room facing the crater! They are very helpful and rooms are great!
“The view is beyond compare...”
This is a charming old hotel with absolutely no frills situated opposite the Visitor Center with a wonderful view of the main crater. It was built about 100 years ago and claims that the lobby fire has been burning continuously. Like many of the old hotels within the National Parks, it has plenty of character but is not fancy. There is no elevator to the second floor rooms. Don't stay here if you need to watch TV.
“Wonderful staging site for traveling to many different places”
We stayed for 5 nights and found everything but the restaurant to our liking. It was easy to visit different parts of the park as well as the entire island of Hawaii over the course of our stay. The restaurant was adequate but expensive for the offerings (we did far better elsewhere p see comments below). The view was terrific.
“A real relief from the heat of Kona and Hilo”
What an experience. We had a "Crater view room" with a great look at the steam vents and caldera right from our quaint room. I was really impressed with the history of the hotel and the quietness. We only stayed one night, but I could have stayed longer. The air is clean and cool at 4000 feet. The visitors center is just a short walk. They have a movies with the history of the volcanoes near by. The people there really love what they do and it makes it all the more exciting. The drives and hiking around the hotel are fantastic. There are many birds in the area to add to the tranquility.
“Volcano House”
Great and historic place to dtay right on the rim of the volcano. WHile it's not the Four Seasons, the rooms were clean and comfortable and staff was attentive.
“Great Room, poor restaurant service”
The crater view room was good and comfortable.. The restaurant is overworked and understaffed.. long delays, low patience. The free early morning coffee helped nurse the jet lag from Dallas !
“The only place I would stay”
We had a crater view room and it was awesome! We thoroughly enjoyed staying within Volcanoes National Park and so close to the volcano. We were also within 5 minutes of the town of Volcano, so that was convenient. It is only 30 easy minutes from Hilo airport. We loved this quaint, yet impressive hotel. We love staying within national parks whenever we can, and we were not disappointed.
“Rustic, spectacular setting”
Ohi'a Wing - decent room if a little small, the 1940s construction is part of the charm. Be advised it's a LOT colder at the top of the mountain than on the coast; fortunately there's a heater in every room. Only concern is the breakfast buffet - 'continental' somehow doesn't include fruit, which is weird.
“The Only Place to Stay if you want to see the Volcano at night”
The Volcano House is the only hotel near the volcano. It's a little rustic (definately not a resort), but it has charm and the staff are incredibly sweet. If you do the hike to see the lava at night, eat dinner first because you won't be back before the dining room closes. The hotel is located on the National Park Grounds.
“Location, Location, Location”
The Volcano House is the most convenient place to stay in order to get "up-close" with the volcanos and hike the many trails in this national park. The restaurant is very good for a meal after hiking ad the view is spectacular from the main dining room as well as from the snack bar. Rooms are plain and the walls are paper thin but we were there for the sights and the outdoor activities so it was fine.
