Honolulu Zoo

Honolulu Zoo showing zoo animals and signage
With over 160 species of tropical bird, the original avian residents of Honolulu Zoo remain the star attraction of what was once the king’s private bird collection.

You can’t miss the graceful pink flamingos that welcome you as you enter the 16-hectare Honolulu zoo site. Close by, you’ll be amazed by the array of brilliant colours of over 160 other species of tropical bird. In fact the zoo is home to over 250 different animal species, not just birds, all kept in custom-made areas designed to replicate their natural habitats.

The zoo is divided into three different zones relating to different habitats – the Pacific Islands, the Tropical Forests and the African Savannah. You’ll encounter some interesting animals including giant reptiles, lithe African cheetahs, cheeky meerkats and majestic Asian elephants. The surrounding Zoo Gardens offer visitors a chance to learn more about Hawaii’s local flora and fauna.

The popular Children’s Zoo can be found right at the centre of the complex. Children can get up close and personal with llamas, pigs and tortoises, and there is a fun playground area too. Nearby, you can watch the tigers at play in the popular tiger enclosure.

You are allowed to bring a picnic with you to enjoy in the grounds, though bringing alcohol is not permitted. If you’d rather grab something on site, head to the Kapahulu Market, where you’ll find a variety of food outlets – if you buy a drink here, you will be treated to free refills throughout your visit!

During June and August, Honolulu Zoo becomes an attractive evening destination when it holds a series of concerts featuring both international and home-grown musical talent. Take a look at the website to see who’s playing during your visit.

Part of Kapiolani Park, Honolulu Zoo is situated between Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head and is open every day except Christmas Day. The entry fee is reasonable and the car park only charges a small amount per hour. Alternatively, there’s free parking available at the Waikiki Shell stadium.
