"Cozy, well maintained hotel 5 mins walk from Happo terminal. Very clean, with onsen which is great after a day of skiing! Guests who stayed there were all very respectful and more family oriented. Fantastic breakfast, and a wonderful team of staff that made us feel right at home. They even gave us a gift box at the end of the stay, so lovely!! Highly recommend!!"

"This was our first time in a Ryokan! And we loved it!! We enjoyed wearing the Kimonos provided and having a multi course dinner! They were also able to provide vegetarian options for dinner as well. The onsen at the hotel was much larger and nicer than the free ones outside the hotel. There is a toilet in the room but no shower, so you have to use the public bath to shower."

"This property was as traditional as it gets. Two Onsens to bath in. Each have separate times for men and women. Provide multicourse dinner that was as traditional as you can get. "A fantastic traditional ryokan within steps of the Zenkoji Temple. The owners and staff were delightful and we felt as though we were living in a family home. We stayed in room 16 on half board and are so glad we did. There are plenty of places to eat in the area but the food we were served in the ryokan were as good as anything we ate in 3 weeks in Japan. Nagano is a lovely town and a welcome change from Tokyo. Don’t forget to visit the Snow Monkeys - the highlight of our trip. "

"We went on a Japan trip for 2 weeks and this was our favorite ryokan, because they made us feel at home. It's in a little town surrounded by snowy mountains, near Shiga Kogen and Snow Monkey Park. My husband and I booked the private spa for 2 hours our first night and it only cost $100 for us both to use. "Enjoyed overall stay. The room is great. Hot springs are awesome. Vegan options for the food could be better. Make sure to check that kids are included when receiving confirmation. We didn’t and have to pay 1/4 more and it was already expensive. I checked the price online for four of us and it was exactly as we paid while booking but the confirmation letter didn’t include kids so we have to pay anyways. Otherwise happy with stay."

"Amazing stay at Shimaya. The owners, as mentioned in other reviews are outstanding. Gave us a ride to the Snow Monkeys and were very helpful. The breakfast (¥700) was simple and quick - toast, fruit, yoghurt, coffee and juice! Onsen was clean and great. We were on the fourth floor and the views were unreal. Will for sure be returning in the winter! "

This may not be an issue for most people, but I read a misleading review which made me book this property thinking there were private showers and that is NOT the case.
