Clifton Hotel
8/10 Good
"Overall, we had a good stay at the Clifton Hotel. The room was comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. The bathroom had been cleaned, but there were still some stains on the toilet, so I think a little more attention to detail with the cleaning would be helpful. The room also didn’t have a fridge, which would have been useful. Unfortunately, the hotel car park was full when we arrived, so we had to park on the street nearby. Despite these small issues, we had a pleasant stay overall and the hotel was good for our trip."
Victoria Square Hotel
8/10 Good
"The hotel consists of two nice, old/character properties which are well-positioned for Clifton. They are well-maintained and clean. It's good that the property has it's own car park within the grounds for around a dozen cars, although I'm not sure why they would charge guests £9 per night to use it. The staff at breakfast were super and couldn't do enough, and the breakfast itself was good quality / choices. Our Check-in was a mixed experience, as they allocated us a room right at the top of the property (no lift!), which it turned out was an inferior room to the one we had booked. When we came back down to point this out, they did ultimately let us have the 'only room left', which was the Large Double Room we had reserved. Thought it a bit odd that they'd allocated the wrong room and then suddenly 'found' a room in an otherwise full hotel!"
The Channings Hotel by Greene King Inns
8/10 Good
"First, the staff - all of them - at The Channings, were superior. Friendly, helpful, accommodating, and willing to go out of their way to help. You won't find better, imo. Next, The Channings is a lovely building, inside and out. Built in 1865 as a lavish home, it retains much of its original architectural beauty - plaster moldings, lovely staircase, beautiful floors, stained glass windows, and gorgeous woodwork. The beer garden is spacious and there's plenty of seating, though it's all picnic tables, which can be difficult for some people. The food was delicious and well-presented. I didn't have a single complaint about any of the meals there, and I had at least one breakfast, lunch, or dinner every day of my five day stay. After the beauty of the rest of the place, the rooms were a let down. Yes, they were clean. Housekeeping did the best they could. But my room, at the very top of the 47-stair ascent (no lift), was actually depressing, It started with a sloppy paint job on the walls and trim, in colors that looked dingy. A ceiling fixture's repair showed expandable foam bulging all around it. Tatty curtains. No chest of drawers, or even a table to lay out my suitcase. Two tiny 2-shelf night stands were it & a narrow closet with too few hangers. Worst, the bed was hard as a plank. No kidding. Pillows too. No peaceful sleep for me. Shower was DANGEROUSLY slippery, no grab bar and no non-slip glazing on the floor to help. So, great place to eat, but not to stay."
