My Top Experiences in Delhi
It was a misty morning in Delhi when I first walked out the airport. Workers where getting ready to start the day and the sun was slowly peaking behind the city. I was wandering around the airport parking hall, following an old man in an orange turban, my taxi driver. Suddenly a monkey jumped from behind a corner. Judging from the look of my taxi drivers face, this was nothing unusual. I sure wasn’t home anymore.
1. Street food
One of the things I most love about India is food, especially in the northern parts of the country. Unfortunately the country is not famous for high hygiene standards when it comes to cooking and it may be a good idea to be careful about what you put in your mouth – to avoid the famous Delhi belly. But myself, I cannot travel to a country like this and not immerse myself in its street cuisine. To be on the safe side, try to only eat in stalls that have long queues of locals and to only eat cooked foods. If you want to enjoy some fresh fruits, make sure they are not peeled and that you can cut them with your own knife. I wasn’t all that careful, but I also have a hospital experience to tell the story. But let’s leave that for another time.
2. Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India, located right next to the below mentioned Red Fort in the heart of the Old Delhi. Why I enjoyed my visit around Jama Masjid was all of its life, the locals, the religion and culture I was surrounded by.

3. Rickshaw ride around the city
Rickshaws are absolutely iconic to Delhi, and well, all India. Discuss a suitable price with a rickshaw driver and travel from A to B the way travel should be done in Delhi! But also, be careful, the traffic sure isn’t what you are used to. Please remember that there is a risk of scams when taking a rickshaw ride, so always use caution!
4. Explore Chandi Chowk
Chandi Chowk is the oldest and busiest market area in Delhi. Chandi Chowk seemed scary to me at first, as any place like this would for a small town girl like myself. Chandi Chowk is filled with scents, stories and life. It may be chaotic, but its the soul and heart of the city.

5. Day trip to Agra
I know I am supposed to be talking about my best experiences in Delhi, but one of them truly was the drive to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. But the beauty of it was not solely in the prodigious piece of marble, but also in the life I could watch go by from the backseat of my car. I organised myself a day trip with Go Beyond Asia.
6. Cows, cows everywhere
In my Finnish travel blog, I actually have an entire post dedicated for Indian cows. There is just something really unique about getting stuck in traffic just because a cow felt like having a break at the roundabout.
7. Red Fort
Red Fort is the gracefully standing memory from the powerful Mughal period. Red Fort is located right next to Jama Masjid, in the Old Delhi.
