Belvedere

Take in some of the best city views in Vienna from this Baroque masterpiece, which is also home to world-class artworks.

The Belvedere is a large and ornate imperial complex in the south-east of the Austrian capital. Approach through its verdant gardens, and make sure to allow plenty of time to appreciate the fantastic artwork on show in Upper Belvedere, while Lower Belvedere houses sumptuous imperial rooms and decorous exhibits.Constructed at the beginning of the 18th century by Prince Eugene of Savoy, Upper and Lower Belvedere are two of Vienna’s most prized Baroque buildings. The prince was a military commander of the Habsburg Empire who gained fame and favour for his victories against the Ottomans – the magnificent complex was built in the wake of these battles.Upper Belvedere is recommended as a starting point for your visit. Admire the imperial painting gallery, and gaze out upon the views from the large windows. Masterworks by Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet are on show, along with the largest collection in the world of Gustav Klimt’s work. Soak in his magnificent and startlingly intimate painting, The Kiss – hugely popular amongst visitors. The Hall of Medieval Austrian Art is another highlight of the complex. The Museum of Austrian Baroque is found in Lower Belvedere, and shows the lavish living arrangements and appointments Prince Eugene would have been used to. His sense of self-importance is reflected in the massive ceiling mural which depicts Eugene as the Greek God, Apollo. The Golden Room is another example of the heady luxuriousness of life here.Venturing around the meticulous French-style grounds, be sure to take in the excellent contemporary art gallery located in the Orangery. If you’d like to explore the imperial stables, you’ll have to visit during their morning opening hours. The Belvedere is found to the south and east of central Vienna, and is served by public transport. The gardens are free of charge, but there is an entry fee to each building. There is a café in Upper Belvedere, and English-language tours are available by prior appointment.
