The small island of Karimun is found within the Riau Island Archipelago of Indonesia. Found just off the east Sumatran coast, this area receives a great amount of traffic from Singapore, with tourists from both Singapore and Malaysia heading to the port town of Tanjung Balai. The only way into Karimun is via boat through the two ferry terminals of the port. One heads to Singapore, Batam, Bintan and Malaysia, while the other takes you to local destinations such as Kundur. Here we’ll be taking a closer look at what makes Karimun a wonderful holiday hotspot.
The main town of Karimun, Tanjung Balai, is a great place to explore on foot. You get a true feeling for the rural tropical Indonesian lifestyle, which makes this a great get away from city life. The area is scattered with temples and traditional kampong areas. One of the best ways to explore Karimun is by bicycle and rentals are available from the centre of town.
Shop near the Pasar Malam, or local market, to find great spa hotels in Karimun . Ranging around 3.5-stars, the quality of accommodation is outstanding. The primary provider of luxury spa hotel accommodation has no less than four in-house restaurants and a poolside bar. Fitness facilities are provided and the hospitality is outstanding.
Kukup is a region of Karimun which has a great range of hotels available. For the best hotels near Legoland Malaysia, shop in Kukup. You have a range of options available to you, with even a golf hotel on offer. All providers have great in-house restaurants and even supply outdoor pools.
Karimun has many temple complexes to discover. Don’t miss your chance to see the Chinese temples of Klenteng Tua Pek Kong, Vidya Sagara, Vihara Cetiya and Vihara Sasana Diepa found in Tanjung Balai and Meral. They host many beautiful artworks and devotional relics including the must-see temple drawings of “General Xue and Lady Fan” as well as “Lady Warriors of the Yang Family”.
The made-made pools beneath the waterfalls of Air Terjun are a great place for visitors to unwind. These pools were built to capture the water dropping from the falls and gives travellers a truly relaxing, soothing place to cool off. The area is relatively quiet and makes for a scenic and tranquil afternoon.
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of inner-city living, then take a stroll or a bicycle ride to the local kampong regions of Meral of Pasir Panjang. It is here that you can witness true rural living and some of the most well-preserved authentic Indonesian architecture in the area.
Within Karimun you will find a local delicacy called Bakso. This meatball dish is extremely popular amongst both locals and tourists. Be sure to give it a try from either the street vendors or those selling their wares from push-carts in the area.
The best area to find open-air vendors is near the ferry terminal, starting from roughly 5pm. Here you will find a broad range of Indonesian food at some of the best prices in the area. If you are looking for fresh seafood, there is no better spot.
