"This property is absolutely stunning—an ideal romantic escape for couples looking to truly unplug. It’s peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by nature, offering a serene atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. We spent two nights in the Hummingbird Suite, which was the highlight of our stay—charming, private, and perfectly designed. We also stayed two nights in the Penthouse, which had equally beautiful views with a luxury feel but much smaller. The views are truly breathtaking, the food was consistently delicious, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. There are so many lovely spots around the property to relax and unwind. We had a couples massage on the terrace that felt like absolute heaven, and kayaking was easily one of my favorite parts of the experience. Just a heads-up—this resort is very critter-friendly! So if bugs, flies, baby lizards, iguanas, or small crabs aren’t your thing, you might want to keep that in mind 😂 All in all, this was a 10/10 stay. We’ll absolutely be back!"

"The owners were very accommodating. Luci lent to me a backpack, bu repellent, sun screen, and even books to read. The bed was comfortable. The room was huge. A large water dispenser was provided with water. The view from the room and long balcony was fabulous. The friendly macaw made my stay very special and memorable in a good way. The cuisine from the adjacent restaurant, Mama Cuquita, was some of the best I have had anywhere in Mexico. I ate there 5 times! I have already shared photos and recommended Sierra Leon to friends. It was a lovely location that was a five minute drive or by bus (10 pesos) from two beaches, Boca and Mismaloya."

"I wanted to take my time before writing this review. My partner and I traveled to Puerto Vallarta specifically to stay at the Xinalani Hotel Retreat—the photos looked stunning. We booked the king suite for its private pool and outdoor shower, aiming for a peaceful, private birthday celebration. We expected some bugs, as the website warns about them, so a dragonfly in our suite wasn’t a big deal. But from check-in, we noticed a foul sewage-like smell in the room. When we brought it up, the afternoon manager dismissed our concern, blaming the ocean or possibly a dead animal—off-putting, to say the least. The odor wasn't constant, but with the open-air design, it returned often. Later, we found the smell came from the path beneath our suite. Other issues included collapsing furniture—one piece even hit me—and a mouse in the suite on checkout day. For a place marketed as a luxury retreat, these issues were unacceptable. What frustrated us most was the management’s tendency to explain away problems instead of resolving them. Despite amazing waitstaff and a great daytime manager on 4/18, the overall experience was disappointing. My rule is: would I go back? Sadly, no. Too many problems, not enough accountability. It’s a hard pass."
