On SEVERAL occasions, their security team was racist towards me. I noticed white (Caucasian) people were able to walk right into the hotel with zero questions from security. They were greeted with smiles and a welcoming security guard. I ,on the other hand, have brown skin. I was born in the US, but I suppose I look like a local Balinese man. Whenever I approached the gate, the guards stopped me, asked me where I was going, wanted to know my room number, and wanted to see my room key as proof. Only a few seconds separated the security guard's interaction with the white guests and their interaction with me. It may seem minor, but like a thousand paper cuts, the hotel's security treated me differently based on the color of my skin, made me feel like I was not a paying guest, and made me feel unwelcomed. There isn't even a practical explanation for their behavior, given that the gate that separates the hotel from the public beach can only be opened with a hotel room key. So why would security have a need to question me if there is already a locked gate? They were over-patrolling and doing so in a biased manner. It's a shame really because everything else about the hotel was pleasant and exceptional, but only after I was allowed to pass through security.
