My favorite part about this ryokan is that you can visit many landmarks by walking, one of which is Kiyomizu-dera. The ryokan is located within a picturesque part of Kyoto. It's a 20 minute walk from the nearest train and 5 minutes from a bus stop.
The staff were nice and understood English. You can request dietary needs for your included traditional breakfast. The breakfast is served at their restaurant and you can choose a time between 7 am and 8:30 am.
I didn't realize when reserving our stay that there is no shower in the room, instead there is a shared onsen. You can request a private time slot if you prefer.
Overall, the ryokan was a great choice for our historic Kyoto experience.
We stayed for 5 days and the thing that really made our stay were the staff! So lovely, always looking after us and very patient with our kids. We loved the ryokan experience and using the onsen every evening. The location is also great for visiting the town. Thanks again for all the tips, the warm welcome and for looking after us so well.
This hotel is outstanding! The staff were the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever experienced at a hotel. The building itself is very clean and our room offered a stunning view of the Yasaka Pagoda. It is in the perfect location if you wish to visit Kiyomizu-dera. Also, the breakfast was delicious and beautifully prepared. I would definitely recommend this hotel and if I visit Kyōto again, this is where I will stay.
This wonderful ryokan provided the perfect Japanese-style hospitality while we visited Kyoto. Upon arrival we were created by several staff who welcomed us and got us into our slippers and the yukatas they provide all guests (a casual Japanese garment generally worn around the home). The onsen (communal spa) downstairs was a warm treat for our tired tourist bones and again, an interesting Japanese experience. The hotel was actually very quiet and we didn't run into any other guests at the spa or shared bathrooms. The hotels.com website says that there is one futon mattress per room, which caused me some pause when booking but that really should say one mattress per person. Our teenage son wanted a bit more softness so he actually took several mattresses from the room's cupboard and created his own version. We are vegetarians so sometimes meals are a challenge in places like Japan where folks use a lot of meat and fish sauce in most dishes, but their breakfast was a delicious work of art that everyone (including two super picky teenagers) loved (many pictures were taken!). The area is perfect; there are several sites within 5 minutes along with great restaurants and we used the hotel as the starting point for a number of walking tours. When we left, four staff followed us outside to see us off and wish us a pleasant journey. Overall, a really delightful and uniquely Japanese experience for the entire family!
Wanted to experience a Ryokan, and it was as expected. Entirely different, beautiful Onsen (mineral pool) total Japanese experience, excellent Japanese breakfast, respectful staff. If you have frequent bathroom needs, get a room with its own toilet. Directly in Higashiyamasou (exuding charm). Replicates living in 19th Century Kyoto!
We stayed just one night, but enjoyed a quiet, restful night and wonderful Japanese breakfast. The manager was informative and helpful (carrying our big suitcases up three stories!) There was a gorgeous view of the hills and Yasaka pagoda out our window. There is only a little English spoken; we are Japanese speakers and found everything easy to deal with. Traditional futons, kept spotlessly clean and fresh. Best ryokan, if a little older, that I've stayed in recently.
This Ryokan was in an excellent position, close to 4 main temples and beautiful cherry blossom lined streets.
The Ryokan was very nice and the staff were good. Nice little touches.
