Muir Woods National Monument

Muir Woods featuring landscape views and forests
Wander among the majestic redwood trees, some of which are hundreds of years old, at this National Park, not far from downtown San Francisco.

The imposing redwood trees of Muir Woods cover an area of 223 hectares, and have towered above this spot for hundreds of years. With some specimens standing at an impressive 79 metres and others estimated to be over a thousand years old, the mighty redwood reigns supreme is this enchanting park.

Muir Woods almost didn’t survive the mass-logging that took place throughout much of coastal Northern California in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. But in the early 1900s, the land which is now known as Muir Woods was bought by a Congressman named William Kent, and subsequently donated to the federal government.

Named after the naturalist John Muir (who was a key player in establishing the USA’s national park system), Muir Woods was declared a national monument in 1908 by then President, Theodore Roosevelt.

Muir Woods is suitable for all ages, with 10 kilometres of wooded trails offering hikes that vary in length and difficulty. Some trails are paved and there are around 2.4 kilometres that are wheelchair accessible. The majority of paths are relatively flat and easy to walk. Although the park is fairly easy to navigate, it’s a good idea to pick up a map from the Visitor Center upon arrival or download one beforehand from the National Parks website.

Only 27 kilometres from downtown San Francisco, being in Muir Woods nevertheless makes you feel that you are far away from the city’s bustle, surrounded by a massive expanse of nature. If you want to visit the park in relative peace, try and visit on a weekday or early or late in the day during weekends when Muir Woods can get particularly busy, especially during the summer months.

Muir Woods is open daily, and is relatively cool and damp throughout the year so it’s worth bringing a few extra layers. Although visitors are not allowed to picnic in the park due to littering concerns, you can grab something to eat and drink at the café situated at the park entrance.
