A whole world of adventure, entertainment and delicious food are waiting to be discovered down on San Francisco’s vibrant waterfront.

Located along the waterfront of the city’s Financial District, the Embarcadero runs from the stadium of the San Francisco Giants all the way to Pier 45. This sea-side stretch boasts a number of San Francisco attractions, including shops and restaurants, the Fisherman’s Wharf neighbourhood and Pier 39, a collection of excellent shops and waterfront eateries.

You’re likely to see people jogging along this part of the bay at all times of day, as they’re attracted to this spot by the great views and cool sea breeze.

Food-lovers shouldn’t miss the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Over 100 vendors set up shop outside the Ferry Building offering all kinds of organic produce, ranging from fruit and vegetables to cheese, ice cream and flowers. Plenty of freshly-baked goods and healthy meals-to-go are on offer if you get hungry. The nearby Centre for Urban Education and Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) also runs cooking classes on market days, which you can join if you are looking for culinary inspiration.

After browsing the market, take the time to explore the Ferry Building itself. Built in a 12th Century Spanish style, a 73-metre clock tower sits inside the impressive building. The various cafés and gourmet bistros are perfect for grabbing a coffee and a bite to eat as you watch the world go by. Head to the back of the Ferry Building for impressive views across San Francisco Bay. If you’re looking for shopping or entertainment, visit the nearby Embarcadero Centre.

A short walk north from the Ferry Building is Pier 33, located at the end of Bay Street. This is where you can catch the ferry to Alcatraz Island, or just have lunch or quench your thirst with views over the water. Another short walk brings you to the Fisherman’s Wharf neighbourhood and the Aquarium of the Bay. If you buy a Wharf Pass, you will gain access to these attractions and others, and it’s a great way of saving money.

The Embarcadero is ideal for a morning or afternoon of leisurely walking, and is not hilly, although there are cable cars running both directions along the length of the wharf road if you want to save your legs!
