Get lost among the rainforest foliage, spices, herbs and flowers at this perennial Singapore attraction.

Singapore's Botanic Gardens have offered respite from the hubbub of the city since 1859. But this is more than just a park – it is an essential centre for plant preservation and research. As a visitor, it's possible to spend hours admiring the various gardens which span over 74 hectares. In fact, it's easy enough to make a whole day of it. There are food and drink options inside otherwise take a picnic along.

The gardens are especially humid, becoming warmer through the morning. The good news is that the attraction opens before the sun is up. Set your alarm and make an early start of it. This way, you'll avoid the worst of the heat and the crowds.

The favourite attraction at Singapore Botanic Gardens is the famed National Orchid Garden, which contains an awe-inspiring collection of flowers. This in itself takes an hour or so to do justice to. Other areas of the Botanic Gardens include a small tropical rainforest which pre-dates the gardens the Evolution Garden which explains how plants have adapted and changed over the centuries as well as a Ginger Garden featuring an idyllic waterfall and an excellent restaurant.

If you're taking kids along, make sure that you visit the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden. It has a maze, tree houses and a water play area. Children can also learn how various dyes and drinks are made from plant life, as well as get to grips with the concept of photosynthesis.

Those with a picnic to hand should eat alongside other picnickers on the lawns of Palm Valley. Outdoor concerts are sometimes held here too.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens are in downtown Singapore. It is reachable by car, taxi or public transport. The attraction is open daily and it's free to get in. There is a small entrance fee for the National Orchid Garden, but it’s well worth it.
