Sunnegga Ski Resort

Sunnegga Ski Resort showing street performance and music
Bring your kids to learn to ski in winter, watch marmots by the lake in summer and ride the famed gondolas through mountains.

Sunnegga Ski Resort is a mountain complex with 15 ski slopes of varying difficulties in the shadow of the Matterhorn. It has excellent hiking trails, links to nearby ski resorts and a terraced restaurant. Ride one of the nine lifts to the mountain peaks for a range of vistas of this sunny, clear region.

Arrive at the Sunnegga Ski Resort from the quaint village of Zermatt via the acclaimed funicular ride. This modern train passes through a rock tunnel inside a mountain to deliver passengers to the resort after a 3-minute ride.

The area has an exceptional topography, contributing to skies that are particularly clear and sunny. Capture photos of the white summits that decorate this snowy region. Bring kids and first-timers to the Kumme and Eisfluh runs and Wolli Park for beginners.

Choose between the blue, red and black slopes of varying difficulties. Experienced skiers may prefer the Fluhalp slope. The steepest and most thrilling expert run is the Obere National, from Blauherd to Patrullarve. Ski down the eastern runs to catch lifts to the neighboring Gornergrat area with additional intermediate slopes.

In summer, walk to the marmot-watching station and learn about these fascinating Alpine animals from the plaques along the trail. Visit the nearby Leisee Lake and bring the kids to its adjacent playground. Enjoy a cookout in the designated areas and take a raft out on the water.

Note that the resort and its self-service restaurant are open year-round in this picturesque valley. Pay a daily fee for lift passes. Get here early in the morning to beat the crowds.

Sunnegga Ski Resort is high above the charming hamlet of Zermatt in southern Switzerland. The ski slopes mostly run down the Rothorn mountain in the area of Valais. Ride the Matterhorn Railway through this scenic mountain region to reach the Gornergrat Bahn and take a funicular or cable car up to the ski resort.

Get to Sunnegga via a railway that goes up 45 degrees inside the mountain. Blumenweg is a pleasant walk, especially if you like wild flowers, you end up at Blauherd, one cablecar stop after Sunnegga.
