Harrogate

A gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, this spa town has modern entertainment venues and restaurants to complement the traditional tea rooms and Edwardian architecture.

With a rich history and well-preserved heritage, Harrogate is an upmarket haven for Yorkshire’s elite. Flower shows and afternoon tea are among the great British traditions upheld in this spa town, which also has a renowned convention centre and entertainment venue. Appreciate the serenity in the gardens and spa centres of this leafy town.

Take advantage of warm, sunny summers with a trip to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, where flower shows take place. Relax with hot drinks in the tea rooms and purchase memorabilia in the shop.

Harrogate became known as the English Spa, as word got out about its water containing sulphur, salt and iron. After exploring Harrogate City Centre, rest your weary feet at the Turkish Baths Harrogate, which has a mosaic floor and Moorish fixtures. Immerse yourself in the spa water of these restored late Victorian baths.

In winter, take refuge from icy cold weather and flurries of snow in the vast Harrogate Convention Centre. Watch a play, recital or stand-up comedy act in one of its many auditoriums, of which the Royal Hall is the highlight. Chandeliers and golden balconies adorn the upper reaches of this Edwardian gem.

Check out the comprehensive collection of fine art from the 19th and 20th centuries in the Mercer Art Gallery and learn about the town’s spa history in the Royal Pump Room Museum. Head to the countryside for the Ripley Castle and Gardens to find out about the role of the Ingilby family in the Gunpowder Plot.

Harrogate is in the northern outskirts of Leeds in Yorkshire. Fly to Leeds Bradford International Airport and take the hourly bus to Harrogate. You can also rent a car at the airport and drive north for 12 miles (19 kilometres) to get here. Travel to some of the surrounding destinations, such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park, York and Manchester.

With its spas and gardens, Harrogate is an idyllic relaxation hub and a window into Victorian traditions.

The queue at Betty’s Tearooms was very very long. We found a tiny place called a Jenny’s Tea shop which was lovely.

I've visited Harrogate many times and enjoyed every visit immensely. This time, however, the hotel was a letdown, we'll stay elsewhere in future.

Come every year. Always love it. Ate at Saranda. It was very good. Then went to the Blues bar. Always good. 15 yrs since our first trip there when we met. So stayed at the same hotel again
