The guest-house was lovely and so were the hosts. We came on a rainy day late in the evening, and they arranged for us to be taken by private car to the most wonderful local and traditional restaurant where we had a delicious tempura meal. The private onsen was a wonderful experience - it was much larger than I expected an had views of the garden. We slept very well and enjoyed the sound of the river and trees. The surrounding area around the guest house is very nice if you want to go for a walk. I highly recommend this property.

Budget 2 star with friendly staff
Staff are really friendly and super helpful. The place itself is old and as a 2 star shouldn’t expect too much. Lots of cobwebs everywhere which show it hasn’t been deep cleaned in a long time. I wouldn’t recommend staying here in summer as there will probably be a lot of spiders and bugs. I stayed in winter (December) so we only seen one spider inside the house. There is free green tea and coffee and clean bottled water in the main lounge which is nice. Hot spring is good since it can be reserved for your room privately. The official time is 30 minutes per room but the owners are flexible and allow longer.

This is a great place to stay for visiting museums. The staff was very nice. It is situated next to the forest so waking up to nature felt particularly refreshing.

I especially love the traditional setting of this guest house. A great cultural experience. This is my first time in Japan and first time doing solo travel. I will definitely come back and stay here. You will get addicted to the onsen too! 😊

The checkin process took over 40 mins. Onsen hours are 4:00pm to 11:00pm. You’ll need to schedule your private onsen, 30 minutes sessions. Very quiet & traditional Japanese style. Short walk to restaurants and seven eleven types stores.

Great location and very friendly service
Our one-night stay at Fuji-Hakone Guest House was an interesting experience. It's an old Japanese style inn with very small but well designed rooms. The tatami floors and sliding shoji doors were charming, as were the futon beds on the floors. Our room had an incredible view of the river and the sounds of the water were so soothing. The futon beds were a bit hard but the quilts were heavenly. There are no bathrooms in the rooms. The two stall bathrooms are shared (one for females and one for males) but I didn't see anyone when I went in to use them. The shower is in the public onsen bath area but you are able to sign up for a private bath time so it's not a problem. The outdoor onsen bath is also available for private use but it costs 500 yen per person for 30 minutes. It's worth is as it is a lovely setting. They do serve a buffet breakfast for a small addtional fee, but no other meals are served. There are a few restaurants in the area and a Lawson's a few minutes walk away. There is a kitchen for guests to use with a fridge, sink, microwave, and dishware. You can pay to use the gas cooker. They serve green tea in the dining area and have information available on all kinds of things: hiking, bus schedules, area restaurants, you name it. We were backpacking through the area and it was a great one-night stay but the room was a little small for any longer than that. They were kind enough to hold our packs for the day while we went hiking.

Very Good Value for Money
Booked the guesthouse while we were riding the train going to Hakone and for a spur of the moment trip, it was really good. Stayed in a traditional style Japanese house/room with straw floors and futons (the comforters were heaven!), and it was very clean and comfortable, and just a stone's throw from the bus stop and the Little Prince's Museum. It had the basic amenities (if you don't mind sharing toilets) but bring your own toiletries. We were also able to use the indoor onset giving that authentic Japanese feel. The family hosts were also very friendly and accommodating giving us good tips on where to explore around the area. Served us nice breakfast too. Only downside we can think of is that the area closes early (around 6pm) as it gets pretty dark in the mountains so be prepared walking on the streets at night.

Extremely comfortable futon pad. Traditional tatami mats and in-room heater/air conditioning. Private indoor and outdoor onsen was a major plus over other accommodations. The family that runs the place was so helpful and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.

Disappointing & expensive for what it is...
This is more like a backpackers than a ryokan. Loud visitors, children running through the halls at all hours. The indoor onsen are old and tired and were almost fully booked when we arrived. Outdoor onsen has an additional charge and was also almost fully booked. The breakfast was terrible. Sugared cereals with plain white bread and a hard boiled egg, with no Asian options and should not have been an additional charge considering what was on offer. This is a place purely for tourists, there is no essence of authenticity. Search for something nicer!

Very quiet area that is perfect for relaxation. Lots of information about the hakone area available at the facility, and the baths are private and very relaxing. Tattooed guests need not fear that they won't be allowed to bathe- it will be just you in the baths

beautiful setting in the hills of Hakone
Went for a weekend during the rainy season. The Guest House is small with a personal touch. Staff go out their way to explain everything and were helpful in every way. Their English was great! The indoor hot spring bath was a great free feature. My only comment was the abundance of signs, rules, and regulations "don't empty your noodles in the sink" was my favorite. I guess they have had noodle related pipe clogging. Still, it felt a little like school. The 10 am check out time is strictly enforced, one could say 'militantly enforced'. But, these are minor quibbles.

Like a hostel
The staff were very nice and helpful. The free onsen (1 for 1 person and 1 for 2 people- for 1/2 hour/day) were nice. You can also rent the outdoor onsen (up to 4 people, I think) but... This ryokan offered few of the amenities we received at other hotels & ryokan. The shared bath was a set of two sinks open to all, and group bathrooms with two stalls. There is a group kitchen if you want to prepare your own food. We didn't use the "request maid service " sign, and unlike everywhere else, they took our trash, but didn't make the beds. There is a sign at the bus stop with directions to the ryokan. Not sure this was cheaper than other options. Again, the staff was helpful.

Interesting experience
We only stayed one night at this hotel. It was clean and comfortable and on a convenient bus route; the walls are a little thin, but other guests were quiet. Haven't shared a bathroom in a hotel in a long time, but it worked out just fine. New experience changing into the proper slippers.

Nice guest house in scenic Hakone
The hotel is in a nice location, right by plenty of bus stops that can take you to any attraction you want to see. There are great restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel has a lovely outdoor hotspring, with water supplied by the Owakudani volcano. The staff are friendly and seem like they care a lot about their guests. The hotel, including the shared bathrooms, are kept very clean. If you are traveling with kids that you simply cannot keep quiet during the night, please stay away from guest houses. It is incredibly inconsiderate to have your children running up and down the halls all night, and fighting and making lots of noise while others are trying to sleep.

Good value, but don't expect a top of the line ryokan experience
We stayed one night. We wanted to show the ryokan experience to some friends we were travelling with. Hakone is an ideal area for the ryokan experience. Be aware the facility is really a repurposed hostel, so if feels more like a summer camp than a genuine ryokan. But it was a lot cheaper than some others I looked at. Nothing wrong with it - you get what you pay for.

Wouldn't recommend this one...
While the 'guesthouse' is in a gorgeous location and did have mountain views it was a nightmare. We stayed in a variety of accommodation in Japan and calling this a guesthouse is downright misleading. It's a hostel and a grimy one at that. My son was quick to point out the 'boogers' on the wall in our room, there was an amazing collection of pubic hair in the only shower and the whole place was kind of smelly. The advertised private onsen was actually shared and you could only book it for a 30 minute period per room per day, and not between the hours of 9 and 5. The staff on two occasions gave us bad directions and advice, once sending us out in the rain pushing a stroller to walk to a restaurant that was closed. Hakone was beautiful and we had a great time there, despite the awful accommodation so do visit but don't stay here.

Value
Their staff is very friendly. They have several folders with information about nearby restaurants, places to see, time of the last bus back to the guest house, etc. They recommended me to a tea house with great atmosphere which I didn't notice on the map, so that's a plus. Their private hot spring is great. At first I thought 30 min is too short, but they have this restriction so that every guest gets a chance to get in, and actually 30 min is long enough. The location might seem far from most attractions, but buses pass by frequently, and you would need to take bus to several places anyway no matter where you stay. All in all, a great hostel. I would totally recommend this hostel to anyone going to Hakone.

Guest house in a very literal sense.
Despite the term "guest house" in the name, I was expecting something more of a hotel. If you're happy staying somewhere that feels more like a hostel than a hotel, this is the place for you. Because people are staying in different rooms of a house, the curfew and check-in rules seem a little strict. However, since there is not much to do evenings in Hakone, the 11 pm curfew ended up not being a problem at all. As a foreigner, I appreciated having the private hot spring available to us and we enjoyed soaking in the hot spring at least twice a day. The employees are very friendly and there is an entire bookcase of information with stuff to do in the area.

Enjoyable,comfortable traditional little guesthous
Visited Hakone with my husband and parents and booked 2 rooms for 1 night! Room is spacious and clean! Futon is very comfortable, very traditional room design! Yukata was provided too. There is not ensuite bathroom, so need to use the sharing shower room and toilet! The staff are very friendly and bring us around the guest house to get us familiar! There is also a coin operated washing machine and dryer! The private onsen is great although quite simple! But for the price paid, it was worth it! There is also an outdoor onsen with additional charge! Overall, an enjoyable stay!
