"This is a wonderful property with a handful of rooms set amongst a lovely garden and pond. We appreciated the King upgrade and enjoyed a quiet time amongst the tropical plants."

Volcano Forest Inn

"The host was excellent. Breakfast was handy. Location was perfect (was able to see an early morning eruption- 5 minutes to the park!) Room was large and comfortable. Lots of resources and books on site. Fridge for lunch/food and kitchen to cook if needed (reasonably stocked). Volcano is colder than Hilo - bring a jacket/sweater. Close to all the little local (delicious) restaurants. Volcano Forest Inn has seen better days. Place really need a deep clean and fresh paint in a few places. Hard to fight the forest and the rain. Could not beat the price and location. Overall very pleasant stay. And memorable trip."

"The location was great! Minutes from Volcanoes National Park! Also it was close to some restaurants and gas! The place was spacious and had comfortable bedding. There was a heater for cooler nights! The coffee pod machine and fridge are such nice features!!!"

Lava Lodge at Hale Kilauea

"If you're looking for a resort or regular hotel, this isn't isn't it. This is a cabin in the woods, far enough from the highway that you can't hear it. It feels more isolated than it is. It's incredible being surrounded by nature! Coqui frogs serenade you to sleep every night and birds gently wake you up in the morning. The rain on the roof is a soothing sound and the cabin is built excellently! The oven is useful for cooking or reheating leftovers. And while the water from the tap isn't drinkable, they give you a gallon of drinking water daily. Definitely check in during daylight hours (which they strongly recommend) because google maps will get confused and tell you to take a non-existent route to your cabin."

"Punawai Hale Barn Bungalow at this property is a wonderfully atmospheric and memorable place to stay. The spacious room with its tropical décor feels warm and inviting, and the sunroom overlooking a lively duck pond adds a peaceful charm. With ducks, chickens, cockerels, sheep, and goats roaming the grounds, the property feels lovingly crafted and uniquely farm‑like, making our stay both relaxing and distinctive — but it’s best suited for guests who enjoy animals and don’t mind a farm‑style environment."

"This is an OK place if you're not looking for everything up to date and sleek. They provided breakfast fixing but we brought our own and left most of theirs untouched. The property is secluded and quiet as long as fellow travelers are quiet. nicely decorated and close to the National Park. a big plus"

"If you're looking for a truly quiet and secluded getaway, look no further. You will feel like you're the only house on the planet. At first I was weary of the weather, but I found that the rain makes this place even more cozy and charming! Listening to the pitter patter on the roof with the windows open helped me sleep like a baby. Not to mention enjoying the gorgeous cooler temps in what I call the second living room which is outside! The hot tub was suuuuch a vibe with the string lights at night. We got to speak with Scott, the housekeeper, a little bit and he was such a nice guy! Little surprises came with our stay too: a free book (which is actually a reaaaally good fiction about Big Island!), 12 farm fresh eggs, croissants, brand new milk in the fridge, little Hawaiian sodas... They went all out to make us feel like we were at home! I miss this place already."
