"Clean room with plenty of hot water in the shower and a comfortable bed. But the outstanding feature was the staff not just helpful but friendly and as someone travelling, on this occasion, on my own they were invaluable. Yes, the property did look a little bit rundown and like it could’ve done with a lick of paint in places but that did nothing to detract from my stay. For r a budget friendly break in a long journey I could not ask for anything else."

Champneys Mottram Hall

6/10 Okay

"Reception staff were disorganised. We had 2 rooms booked - one was a larger king and the other a twin. We were directed to the wrong room. After repacking and finding the correct room the a/c was not working. Engineer never appeared as promised and after a further call a receptionist came to say he couldn’t fix it. We were promised a second fan which never arrived. The twin room was set up as a double despite requesting a twin. Both rooms were a long way apart despite asking for them to be close to each other. Toiletries fixed on the wall next to the sink were hand wash and conditioner rather than body lotion. In the shower it’s a combined hair wash/body wash. We were given complimentary breakfast as a result of the issues. The hotel is set in lovely grounds but rooms need a facelift and staff need to be better trained."

"High Tor comments: I fancy we caught the High Tor at a time when it was going thru a change period. - the grounds outside needed a gardiner - The building needed a good paint job, especially the windows (maybe replacing) - I think we were the only customers that first day, only my car in the car park! - There were staff available but except when we checked in we didn’t see anyone stationed at the reception desk - not even for checkout! - We ordered breakfast for the following morning and we arrived at the breakfast room before the cook arrived! - No one cleaned our room we made our own bed; and tea bags/milk were not replaced - Bathroom had minimal space eg no shelves for bathroom items - The second day had more people, well cars in car park - I’m not convinced anyone from the staff was on sight overnight but maybe available by phone!! Is that legal? - Menu was limited and evening meals seemed specific to Indian meals"

"Good stay! The room was excellent and the shower was particularly nice. Staff were helpful - when we rang down to say the hairdryer was not working, a replacement was sent up immediately. Good selection of breakfast options and beautiful views. We did eat in the restaurant twice and were disappointed by the slow service and inattentiveness of staff. Food overall was good and nice variety, but it felt like they were understaffed (but just turned out the staff were chatting at the bar) However, this would not put me off staying again as overall very good!"

"This was our fourth stay at the Crescent, our first under Champneys’ ownership. As locals we are invested in the building, having followed its restoration over the years, not least with considerable financial help from the county and borough councils. We booked our stay some weeks ago through Expedia - I selected a room we had used before and paid full price. I didn’t delve for the ‘important information’ which is further down the screen. Therefore, we were astonished on arrival to find we would have to pay an additional £40 per person per night just to swim in the hotel pool. This was ‘Champneys policy and part of the spa package’ - I never asked what this included though I suspect not much judging by the individual cost of each of the different spa treatments available. I have never been charged to swim in a hotel pool before, nor had the friends staying with us who are world travellers. The manager reduced the cost to £20 each after I complained. The room was comfortable but the breakfast disappointing - flabby slices of bread for the toaster - no fresh loaves - and our friend’s poached egg was cold. To add insult to injury, our room was advertised that day at £50 less than we paid in advance. Sadly, we won’t be returning which is a shame as it was previously our go-to local choice for special occasions."
