Located just 25 kilometres south of the busy streets of downtown Taipei, the district of Wulai is a beautiful rural area of northern Taiwan. It features stunning hot spring facilities, the beautiful Wulai Falls, and has a long and fruitful Aboriginal history. Of course, the gorgeous mountain scenery makes this place a highly recommended holiday destination for tourists.

Not surprisingly, bathing in the hot springs of Wulai is the most recommended activity for visitors. Before jumping into a hot spring, visitors need to follow proper etiquette and wash thoroughly. There are several famous springs worth visiting. The Yunding Hotel and Gwoji Hotel will give tourists a chance to enjoy a beautiful hot spring for a fee. There are also some free springs to enjoy near the banks of the Nanshih River.

Wulai is a great outdoor recreation spot, and nothing beats hiking in the surrounding mountain region where a variety of birdlife can be viewed. Visitors can find plenty of hiking trails around the mountains, giving stunning views of this gorgeous river district. Hikers don’t need to be experienced as many of the trails are easy enough for beginner trekkers.

The Wulai area is an Atalya Aborginal township. Therefore, there are many different traditional foods to enjoy here. Even though some of the dishes sound unusual, they are absolutely delightful. Wild boar is a common item on the menus, and so too are bamboo tube rice and pickled pork. Tourists won’t find night clubs or pubs in this district but there are coffee shops and restaurants that serve the traditional Aboriginal alcoholic beverage, millet wine.

Tourists won’t find large department stores or many retail outlets along the streets of this district. Instead, the most popular thing to shop for is locally-made hand-woven cloth. These cloths have been produced for centuries by Aboriginal populations, and still continue to this day. The popular muaji snack is also recommended. It is a sticky-rice candy that cannot be missed.
