“Small Hotel, but a decent stay”

My colleague and I had to spend 5 nights at the Paddington House hotel on a business trip. It's a small hotel and from the outside the building itself doesn't look that appealing. However, our rooms were comfortable and clean - housekeeping did a wonderful job on my room each day. The front desk staff was great - reserving our taxis each day, even knowing who we are to come get us in their bar when our husbands called us. It gave a much more personal feel than if we were at a large chain hotel.

We picked this hotel as a convenient stopover near the M6. It was cheaper than a Travel Lodge so we didn't expect much... However it was totally charming, the staff couldn't have made us feel more welcome and best of all was the restaurant. It's not big but the menu is cracking and the portions and quality of food were brilliant. A whole plate of scallops with bacon and black pudding? What a great local twist, delicious and that was just a starter (as was a whole leg of duck). Needless to say we hardly made a dent in the excellent main courses. The restaurant room is called the Paton Room after Dot Paton, who has worked there for 40 years and is a sweetie. The room was small but cosy with tea-making facilities and a clean modern bathroom. What a fantastic change from the faceless chains of identikit hotels in this price bracket. We had a great night and have saved it on our SatNav for future visits (but we won't eat for a few days beforehand!).
