Sitting along the western banks of the Saigon River in southern Vietnam is the country’s most populous and modern city. Ho Chi Minh City, often referred to as Saigon by both locals and foreign tourists, dates back to 820 BC though its French Colonial era is what is most present in the city’s core today. At the same time, the city is extremely modern, with its skyscrapers, hi-tech parks, and business and entertainment district.
Don’t Miss
Ho Chi Minh City offers tourists the chance to get a true cultural and historical experience as well as a modern one, with it taking at least five days to truly explore and get a feel for the city.
For the historical aspect of Ho Chi Minh City, take a tour around District 1 to see its French colonial architecture and wide elegant boulevards. The most prominent buildings in the district include the Reunification Palace, Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, the Saigon Opera House and the Rex Hotel.
If you wish to explore the more modern side of the city visit: Suối Tiên Amusement Park, Bitexco Financial Tower, Quang Trung Software Park, Dai Nam Tourist Park or one of the many shopping malls found mostly throughout District 1.
Those wanting to get out of the city and go on a day trip should try these attractions: the 250 kilometres of underground Cu Chi tunnels, the mangrove forest of Can Gio, the city of Can Tho and its floating markets.
Restaurants and Bars
There is no shortage of places to eat and drink in Ho Chi Minh City in all price ranges. Food stalls can be found everywhere, including on the Ben Thanh Market and the Night Market, and they serve delicious flavourful local dishes. It is also possible to dine on international food, with some restaurants being quite high-end and others cheap burger or kebab type places. Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of places to drink, from local pavement bars to fashionable clubs. There are also some great breweries throughout the city as well as some cosy coffee shops.
Shopping
Vietnamese handicrafts and typical souvenirs are easy to find in Ho Chi Minh City, particularly in Ben Thanh Market, along Dong Khoi and on Phạm Ngũ Lão Street in the backpacker centre of the city. For local art, take a stroll along Bui Vien Street, while Huynh Thuc Khang is the best place to shop for electronics. There are also numerous modern shopping malls selling both international and local designer labels. These include Diamond Plaza, Zen Plaza and Saigon Paragon.
