“Taxi drivers have no idea where it is”

I got a "pre-paid taxi" at Kolkata airport, but the car did not say "taxi" on it anywhere, and they demaned four times as much as I had paid at the counter, saying that had been "just the taxes". It was in a dark carpark in the middle of the night, and 3 men were there and had locked my backpack in the boot, so I couldn't leave and go back to the airport. They said the Hotel Venkateswara was so far away (and it took some time for the taxi counter to find out where it is as they'd never heard of it), that it would cost more for the taxi there than it cost me to book it. Terrified at being taken out of town on some lonely road in the middle of the night, I let the taxi driver just take me to some hotel in the middle of the city, so I ended up losing all the money I'd spent on pre-booking the Venkateswara, as I didn't get to stay there, then had to pay for the hotel I was actually taken to. Tips: do not arrive in India in the middle of the night; do not trust anyone who says 'yes, I'm a pre-paid taxi'; and do not let men padlock your bag in the boot of a car that does not say "taxi" on it anywhere.
