Head to San Jacinto to learn about Texan history and enjoy great views from the top of the monument.

Built as a memorial to all those who lost their lives in the fight for Texan independence, the San Jacinto Monument sits on the site of a decisive battle of this conflict. Taking three years to build and standing at an impressive 174 metres, it is the tallest monument in the world.

On 21 April 1836, Texan forces were victorious against Mexico in a battle here that resulted in 10 years of Texan independence, before the state eventually became part of the United States of America. Work began on this concrete and limestone monument in 1936, 100 years after the battle. The base of the monument features inscriptions marking important events in Texas before and after the 1836 revolution. Note the 10-metre tall Lone Star that sits atop the tower—the symbol of Texas.

Take the lift up to the observation deck that sits just below the Lone Star emblem. From here you can enjoy wonderful views across the Shipping Channel to the city skyline, and have a great perspective on the historic Battleship TEXAS.

If you want to learn more about Texan history, visit the small museum located at the base of the tower. The large bronze doors feature the Six Flags of Texas—representing the six nations that have ruled over this land. The museum houses a diverse collection of paintings, books and weapons, and even includes the personal dictionary compiled by former state governor Sam Houston. Take the time to watch the informative 35-minute documentary that will explain the Battle of San Jacinto in more detail.

Even if you aren’t interested in history, San Jacinto is still worth a visit. This 400-hectare site features signposted walks and nature trails, dotted with picnic tables and outdoor grills, making it the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. Although entrance to the park is free, there is a small admission fee to the San Jacinto Monument.

Located about 30 minutes from downtown Houston, the San Jacinto Monument and park features plenty of free on-site parking.
