Find out more about Wan Chai

About Wan Chai

The district of Wan Chai lies on the north shore of Hong Kong Island. It is a mix of skyscrapers, plush hotels, and modern architecture with the occasional historic building like the Old Wan Chai Post Office. Wan Chai is noted for its exciting nightlife venues, varied shopping, and assortment of fine restaurants. The swanky shopping malls of Causeway Bay are right next door.

Don’t Miss

The two most famous landmarks in Wan Chai are the Golden Bauhinia Square and the Blue House. The latter is a restored apartment building painted bright blue and a mix of Western and Chinese design. It now houses the Livelihood Museum. Apartments in the museum have been recreated so they look like they did in the 1930s.

Bauhinia Square is home to a huge golden bauhinia flower commemorating the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997. The square is beside the city’s convention and exhibition centre. Wan Chai is home to a port served by Star Ferries from Tsim Sha Tsui and Whampoa Garden. Crossing Victoria Harbour on one of the ferries gives wonderful views of the island and Kowloon.

Restaurants and Bars

Wan Chai is one of Hong Kong’s best known nightlife areas. There is a good choice of venues to suit all tastes. There are a few themed British-style pubs, the legendary Joe Bananas, discos, and even karaoke lounges. Lockhart Road is a good place to start a night out. The area has plenty of dining options. Despite the fact most establishments serve Cantonese food, there are other options like Japanese, Spanish, and Italian.

Shopping in Wan Chai

You won't find many electrical appliances in Wan Chai, but locals say the district offers better value for money when shopping. Shopkeepers on Queen's Road East sell rattan and wood products and furniture and can arrange shipping for larger purchases. Tai Yuen Street‘s shops stock toys and collectibles while Johnston is one of several streets selling clothing.
