Hang out with the animal kingdom to encounter a rich variety of wildlife at one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia.
With more than 100 animal species to discover, Johor Zoo is an unmissable attraction. Spend a few hours with the animal kingdom, watching, learning and enjoying indigenous and non-native wildlife.
The zoo's origins date back to 1928, making it one of the oldest in the country. It was originally a private menagerie for the royal family but was opened to the public in 1962.
Wander through its grounds to see lions, crocodiles, bears, elephants, flamingos, gorillas, wallabies and much more. Among the highlights are the hippos in their enclosure. Take a seat for the bird show and watch some of the animals being fed. When you need to stop for a break, relax on one of the benches dotted all over the place.
Take part in other activities at the zoo. Go over to the photography corner where you can take your picture with some of the animals. Rent a paddle boat for a short trip on the mini boating lake. Let the children run, climb and burn off some energy in the playground.
If you haven’t brought a picnic with you don’t worry, because there are numerous food stalls among the grounds.
The zoo is a short bus or taxi ride from the city center. It is open daily and charges for admission. Discounts are available for students and children aged between 3 and 12. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water with you, because it can be hot and humid in the zoo. It is also advisable to wear light-colored clothing.
Johor Zoo is compact, covering approximately 31 acres (12.5 hectares) so plan to spend about half a day here. Then with the other half, explore nearby attractions. These include the Royal Abu Bakar Museum, housed in the former Grand Palace of the Sultan of Johor. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden, an ideal spot for a stroll.
