The Cathay Guest House is a bit of an adventure. The squat toilet did not have the "bum gun" hose as those in Malaysia do, and was quite narrow, so hitting the target was a challenge., and clean up inevitable. The bed I must say was firm like a slab of concrete is firm. No hot water for your shower. The fan was plenty of cooling even without any aircon. The breakfast at Cathay was excellent and cheap. Having coffee, tea, and fruit available was terriffic. The front desk was A+: helpful and very pleasant. I must say that for the price paid I did feel Cathay delivered a good value. The hardest thing to me was the cold shower. Bring your own handtowels I'd say, and maybe a bath sponge. The location was A-OK, though we did no touristic stuff at all. If I do a Hat Yai visa run from Penang I think next time I'll book a more upmarket hotel with hot water and a conventional toilet.
Pros: Very nice people. Wonderful pineapple available at the excellent breakfast. Central location. Nice staff.
Cons: I think adding hot water and upgrading the toilets would make a world of difference. The shower water drain was very slow leaving the floor wet.
Location: We shopped at Robinson's and Centrat department stores and bought prescription drugs at pharmacies much cheaper than in Malaysia.
